He has plenty of time to develop a kick. Rupp developed a world class kick. Nico has developed a world class kick. Blanks can also develop a world class kick.

You believe that the difference between Young’s finish at Paris last year and Oslo this year was because he developed a world class kick? Could Young accelerate off of 12:40 pace?

Have ANYONE been listening? You don't develop kicks, you gain enough endurance in which you still have something left to increase pace/sprint latter in races.
A 5000m man could have 48 second open 400m speed but only endurance capable of 13:10 against a 51 second 400m man endurance capable of 12:55. 13:05 5000m race who do you think will have the fastest last 300 to 500m?
ANSWER: The one whose endurance isn't over maxed by the pace
I don't see any reason to doubt that Graham Blanks will be in the 12:30s next year, if healthy. His second stint at altitude will give him that strength necessary to give him a chance to kick with the best guys.
Well one reason to doubt that Graham will break 12:40 next year is that only 6 people have ever done it and each of those 6 only did it once. So he would enter very select company.
Yeah, that's what I was going to say. I know it's easier to run faster times now, and it's possible he breaks 12:40, but there will be a lot of others doing it as well if he does. Or, maybe he will be outstanding and beat everyone!
Option 1: Stay in the 5k/10k, run fast times, make US teams, but consistently get outkicked in championships and Diamond Leagues. Never win anything of note.
Option 2: Move up to the marathon. Make way more money and immediately become America’s best hope to win a major and medal at Worlds/Olympics.
Option 2 seems like the better choice to me. Graham is an aerobic beast who seems made for the event. Here’s hoping he isn’t wasting his prime years on events that he will never medal in.
I think it’s Norwegian. He may have dual citizenship
Maybe Jewish. Mel Blanc, the great voice actor, changed his last name spelling from Blank to Blanc when he was just 16 years old, the reason being, he had a teacher that told him that if he left his name as Blank that he would amount to nothing and be like his name - a blank.
Read the Blanks surname history and see the family crest, coat of arms for the English Origin. Discover the Blanks surname history. Where did the name Blanks come from?

How stupid are you? How old are you? He is a kid and is still improving.

I was a bit surprised that so many people were critical of this statement. College and professional coaches have made this kind of advice for eons. Sometimes it worked and sometimes it didn't. It depends on the individual. Regardless, I wish fewer people were so quick to judge the OP. That does not encourage anyone, in anyway shape or form. It doe not insprire anyone. JeffreySinger made an excellect introduction to an outstanding discussion!
Agree. Don't underestimate Mantz's overall ability. We'll likley never see Mantz specifically train and peak for a 5k again. Even the 10ks are speed work during a heavy buildup, so they don't really reflect his ability level. Mantz isn't going to run 12:45 for 5k, but give him 18 months of dedicated, specific training for the 5k and you'd see sub 13, more likely in the 12:50-12:55 range. Then, take that as baseline aerobic speed, add all the marathon X factors Mantz has in abundance (grit, small build, tolerance for high volume), and you get a legit world class marathoner. If he stays healthy, 2:03 incoming, although Valencia would be better than Chicago.
He ran 12:48 straight out of graduation from Harvard, an 11 second pr. What in your right mind could possess you to think that he is somehow capped before even going to altitude, in his first year as a pro? Nico sure wasn't at this level in his first pro campaign. And we know from his COVID year that Blanks is a high responder to altitude.
You don’t read well. I never said Blanks was “capped.” I said there is a reason, and I provided the reason, why one might doubt that Blanks will run under 12:40 next year, when you said you “don’t see any reason to doubt” that he will break 12:40 next year.
Oh, I read well. Nothing is certain. This is a supershoe/double threshold era. Sub-12:40 is within reach of a lot of guys now. The # under it so far means little. Almgren ran 12:44 today. Nico 12:46. Grant 12:44 indoors solo. There were several 12:30s last year. Blanks is just getting started as a pro. He has not gone to altitude yet. He has only had a few months of consistent training under his belt, in fact. In fact, this was not the ideal kind of race for him to pr right now, because it was relatively slow to 3k (7:42), and then there was a major late pickup (Nico closed in 1:54), and Blanks as of yet cannot keep up with that, but can stick on a 2:31-32 pace, as evidenced by his track workouts recently. If he gets in a 5000m this year that is paced for mid 12:30s, he'll already be in the low 12:40s, maybe even 12:38-39 this year. This race did not play to his strengths. Mark it down.

It would just take a few weeks to prepare for the 5000. It’s the same sport after all.

Amen, good post. Most definitely agree on Valencia and potential for a 2:03-something. Not sure I agree on 12:50-12:55 for Mantz though. He strikes me as more of a 13:00/27:00 guy at absolute peak in perfect racing conditions and perfect training geared toward the track. Like 13:03/27:07 to be specific. But he still has amazing range.
Blanks, on the other hand, probably can still drop another 8-10 seconds in the 5000 and run an extremely competitive 10,000.
Lots of posters in this thread eating crow tonight.
Graham can’t kick with the best runners in the USA, let alone the world. He will never be a legitimate threat to medal on the track. Go make that marathon $$$, Graham!
