We merged this thread with another thread that was started as the race was going on. That thread was titled incorrectly (as it was a 2 mile): "Record watch: Hedengren in 3200m"
She does it again. She is clearly the best US High School distance runner . . . ever. wow. Beats Mary Cain’s (2nd best) U20 record by 3 seconds. What race should she run at US Championships . . . 1500M or 5000M?

supershoes have ruined the sport
She beat all the other best runners in the country by a half a lap plus. They all have the same shoes.
I'm old enough to remember Melody Fairchild, who is the only rival to Hedengren in terms of HS distance running, IMHO (absolutely destroyed fields in her era in much the same way that Hedengren is doing now, world bronze XC). Girls high school performance are much higher variance than boys in terms of long-term projections, but Hedengren certainly projects to the best American women's runner ever, if she keeps progressing like this. She's going to a good, aerobic-based program. Fingers crossed that she stays healthy and keeps doing what she's doing.
Jane's 7th grade sister Susan just ran 4:57 for 5th in the junior mile. She is ahead of Jane's age progression. Susan's 6th grade 12yo teammate Angie Alder was 3rd in 4:53. Their club is coached by Jane's father.
1176 in World Athletics points, equal to 14:53 for 5k and 4:22 for the mile. So it’s her best performance, but shouldn’t be as shocking as it was to me when I saw the time, given she’s run 14:57 and 4:23.
I know this is downright stupid to say at this point, but given how BYU has recently produced so many great men’s and women’s steeplers, it could be a possibility for Hedengren’s future…she could have U.S. GOAT talent for that event.

And Jane's teammate Lily Alder wins the mile in 4:37.35. (Angie's sister)

Alder’s older sister (Carmen) and Hedengren’s older Brother (Isaac) both currently run for BYU.

The odds are probably 1000 to 1 against Susan being as good as her older sister. What Jane has accomplished is once in a generation.

I would say 10:1. She definitely could have the genetics but yeah the stars really had to align for Jane.

Old enough to remember Fairchild also-this reminded me of her performances also--early 90s she ran 10 flat for 2 miles at 5000 feet essentially solo with no supershoes....great to see Hedengren going to a good college program rather than going pro...

What were the odds of Jacob being better than his brothers?🤣 There the pluses where the younger kids tend to get pushed in earlier and there is a certain confidence in knowing a family member was good in a sport. On the downside is the pressure. You tend not to here the stories when the younger brother isn’t as good..
