Oregon High School State Meet Thread

Obviously you are poor.

Reflecting on yesterday's performances, has any female prep athlete in Oregon ever held the 1500 meter and 3k state meet record at the same time? If cross country is also taken into account it seems as though Chloe Huyler's cross and track season are equal to any distance runner that has come out of Oregon, including legends such as Ella Donaghu and Chloe Foerster. Lots of great talent coming up in the lower year groups as well, so the legacy and future of distance in Oregon look strong. Great 5A performances in the 3K and 1500 in addition to the 6A performances. Lots of parity in the two divisions towards the top. With talented seniors moving on it is going to be fascinating to watch these emerging stars over the next couple of years.

It seems my earlier post about Dyestat/Runnerspace reporting was very much on point. The "Oregon State Meet Recap" article published today makes no mention of Huyler's two meet records or Wisnieski's fourth 3K title. Winning the 1500 meters and the 3k in state meet record time was likely the most significant meet performance on the girl's side, and it isn't mentioned in the meet recap at all? Is girl's distance covered the same way that boy's distance is covered?

How can the Oregon Meet summary, which a a somewhat lengthy article, have no discussion of girls' distance? No mention of Huyler setting state meet records in the 1500m and 3k, no mention of a Wisnieski's 4th straight 3k win? No mention of the girls' 800 meter race? Sure there is journalist judgment of what an article contains, but these were the defining moments of the meet on the girls' side. The article is held out to be an accurate summary and reflection of the meet and provides no mention of some of the key events at the meet. How often are two distance records set in one meet by the same athlete? Every local outlet reported on these events. Out of an interest in fair and equitable reporting the article should be amended to accurately reflect the performances that occurred at the meet as this in incomplete and hence inaccurate summary of events. These articles help describe and disseminate key performances to readers (who are national track fans), and a failure to include highlight performances is a real disservice to fans of the sport who want to be apprised of events and key performances nationwide.

I agree with you that the running press hasn’t covered women very well and that’s a shame. The mainstream press has also failed to cover sport in lieu of the controversy surrounding transgender athletes at the meet and subsequent protests.

The point is that an ostensible summary of the Oregon State Meet that leaves out the performance of an athlete that wins two distance events and sets state meet records in both is not accurate reporting. Someone from another state reading about the meet would not get an accurate recap of the performances at the meet. Nor is it a historically accurate summary of the meet. It is incomplete and hence inaccurate. If Dyestat values accuracy in reporting they should amend the article to reflect the performances of girls' distance, including the 1500 meters, 3k and 800 meter events.
