I agree, Mary Cain was very good. She did peak at the age of 18, and flamed out thereafter. Nonetheless, quite notably, Hedengren’s current 5000m PB is 47 seconds faster than Cain’s.
In addition, as a high schooler, per her IAAF profile, Cain never ran the 800m faster than 1:59.51. Therefore, if Hedengren actually were to break the current 800m record of 1:59.04, that would indeed put her in the conversation of all-time US High School GOAT for both mid-distance and distance.
Hedengren will be in discussion as hs GOAT. The '24-'25 hs season will automatically go down as the best pure hs xc/track year.
Her only weaknesses in the all time discussion are longevity, doing it over several years (Touhy), and lack of international competition. (Cain, Decker, Fairchild)
Certainly, if she managed to go sub 2:00 in 800 (not impossible) or break hs 10k record (likely if she tried), or made US team this summer, this would further strengthen her GOAT credentials.
Tuohy is not in the discussion for the GOAT. GOAT is reserved for the level of Cain, or higher. The ‘longevity’ is dumb, since she competed in a weaker era, and got trumped when other girls started leveling up.
Based on her 14:57, and my own experiences and detracting a few seconds as women lack relative power in a 800, she likely is close or at a 4:20 mile, and to run a 4:20 mile, she is likely to be around 2:03. If it was a male, I'd guess 2:00, maybe even under at that age. She is a miler/5k person running an 800 although I didn't see the sub 15 so what do I know.
Hedengren’s team mate Lily Alder is also set to run the 800M at BYU Invitational also. Alder is a 2:07 800M and 4:40 miler as a Sophomore last year. Together they should be able to pace/push each other. Both have PRs in 800M of 2:07 that are now a year old.
800M is Friday at 8am MST. They are accepting 320 entries for the girls 800M with 17 per heat, seeded based on time, run slowest to fastest so 17-18 heats. (years past they did prelims/finals etc). Jane Hedengren and Lily Alder (both from Timpview) will be in last/fastest heat sometime around 8:45-50am MST.
