I disagree that this is a big deal. History is full of defending gold medalists who did not appear in the final four years later for one reason or another.

Depends on the distance, of course, but Skah, Kerr, Alberto, Karnazes, and Roche are all good answers. The Eastern Europeans when they were all doped. And the Russians, more or less across eras. The Chinese turtle soup eater-era athletes were loathed. Talk to Kerr’s NCAA contemporaries, too. Kerr’s reputation pre-dates the ingebrigtsen feud.

Phrasing it like this deceptively flips what was really an unethical individual with a male body making a joke of the the international women's 800 scene for a full decade. Many bad people "face vitriol and harassment", but what a manipulative way to phrase it.

the African women right now are particularly annoying, what, tripling in very hard events? in major champs, running what 208 marathon soon? etc. that wipes out the sport right there. but then again, it was kind of wiped out in the first place.

right now, the hate of the moment is the new American 800 "world" beating guy out of nowhere, suddenly becoming a miler and near record 1k guy. along with other 800 wonders of last year, at least some of these people have actual talent.
