We changed the title of this thread. The thread was initially titled, "World Indoors 3000m list is out **ENTRY QUOTA IS NOT EVEN FILLED** but to us the bigger news is that Jakob got into the 3k.
Only 14 runners entered for the 3000m at Nanjing World Indoors. The entry quota was 15 runners, which means there is an empty spot! Some interesting points:
Jakob Ingebrigtsen gets the 14th spot with his 7:48 from Euro Indoors...
James West is denied the entry by UK Athletics as he is not considered strong enough although he would be 11th on the list.
Athletics Kenya killing its athletes once more by selecting Cornelius Kemboi who has never run an indoors race and leaving out Mathew Kipsang who would be in 11th place.
I’d give the lean to Kipsang if so, but why not enter both I suppose? They let Festus Lagat go in so who knows what might be at play. Kipsang seems like a club athlete so maybe he has other obligations in Spain:
I somewhat trust Aregawi, i don’t think he neglects speed/hills. Doubt he beats Jakob but I think he’ll go out and make it a race.
Why in the hell would Kenya want to send a 29-year-old who is living in Spain. Presumably he's living there as he is trying to get Spanish citizenship? I'd rather take the 25-year-old that lives in my country. Are you sure Kipsang even wanted to go? If he's trying to transfer allegiance, he most definitely doesn't want to go.
According to his manager, Kipsang lives in Kenya and works for KDF. He does not intend to get a Spanish citizenship and his goal was to go to Nanjing.
His only link to Spain is that both his coach and manager are from there. But he does not compete for any Spanish club at all.

Well he competed in Spain 9 times last year including in the Andorran Championships (his placing didn’t count). This does seem like a recent thing since last spring. Either way it would’ve been better if he’d been selected as opposed to just 14 guys. I don’t understand Kenya not selecting him but they have pretty full teams and I don’t see any reason there’d be a vendetta.

in 2024 he did 5 outdoor track races in Spain + 4 other across Europe; 4 cross in Spain + 1 other cross in Italy.
2025: 5 indoor track races in Europe and 1 road race in Spain.
Given the fact that both coach and manager are Spanish I'd say it is quite normal (also his coach is the Andorra's team coordinator). He started running in Spain as it might have been easier to get into meets if his team is from there, and as he progresses he is starting to get better opportunities through Europe.
Seeing Kenya's team, I'd say they are loosing the opportunity to possibly promote a new runner when they are currently lacking in results compared to US and Europe athletes

Agreed, but indoors does help out. With no wind, at least if Aregawi gets to the lead he can try to make it very hard for Jakob to pass on the straights.
Aregawi is a great athlete, but let’s be real: he doesn’t have a prayer against Jakob in a 3k. No one does.

I continue to hate UK Athletics. "Not strong enough" despite being ranked high enough to go. Good lord. They pull some stupid BS like this with every major championship.
Its only a matter of time before they refuse to send anyone. Also most of these athletes will benefit contractually from competing at a championship. But UK Athletics being one of the most retarded organizations on the planet probably would not let them.

Too short for him. Would probably do better in the 10k.
Aren't the Brits shooting themselves in the foot by excluding runners like this? Surely the costs cannot be that large. Just send the runner and perhaps one coach/helper/assistant and pay for flights and lodging?

Agreed - I can't think of any scenario where Aregawi could beat Jakob in a 3k.
NCAA cutoff time is 8 seconds faster than World Indoors...
NCAA might not have more quality but it will for sure have more depth
Good point!
There was a year, if I am remembering correctly, where the women's SEC championships results were faster than the World Championships in some of the sprints... I know that sounds insane, but that is why I remember it.

Is this going to be Festus' first time suiting up for Kenya? Congrats to him. Everybody hating on indoors needs to chill, feel like everybody has been acting like this for decades now regarding indoor. I actually like a lot of things about indoor, and I know a bunch of you guys are going to be looking forward to NCAA's, so quit the hating.

Tend to agree. It’s a value-add. And clearly as we saw last year, it’s a good springboard for many athletes.
