We caught up with Patrick after his podium-finish on Monday and to keep it short, it’s been a rocky road for the newest member of the Wolfpack. Formerly competing for Fordham, Tuohy said he had done the opposite of what everyone dreams of in college athletics and was, “lost,” which eventually led to him prioritizing the, “college experience,” over running.
Between his gap at Fordham and NC State, he found a resurgence in his love for the sport through the trails that he once had logged countless miles on during his high school days. This added on top of having time to watch his siblings, Katelyn and Ryan Tuohy, compete inspired him to get back on his feet and was grateful for his family support system.
In July 2024, Patrick trained under John Trautmann and the Empire Elite team to truly light the fire back under his feet. Despite only 5 weeks of serious training under Trautmann, his (Patrick) 800m had improved from 1:52 → 1:48, which was a considerable improvement from his previous best of 1:54.
In Tuohy’s words, “I realized how good I could actually be if I put in long periods of training like an elite athlete.” After this, he decided that his best option would be to return to the NCAA where Coach Laurie Henes and NC State decided to give him the chance to finish his collegiate career.
The rest is history, and a journey continuing to be traveled by Patrick as he enters his final NCAA spring.
