And believe me, “emergency“ is interpreted quite liberally. Medicaid barely reimburses most healthcare facilities as it is, but at least you are partially covered, and you can squeak by. They were the ones who were traditionally on Medicaid. Expanded Medicaid (the main driver of the massive increase in expenditures between 2008 and today and the resulting deficits) included many able bodied individuals. And the system is abused by couples that co-habitate to take advantage of free healthcare and SNAP benefits for their kids.

The point being discussed was whether LRers have parents who would be impacted by Medicaid cuts. Sure, old poors are covered by Medicaid, but presumably we mostly come from decent families and our elderly parents aren’t living in Medicaid nursing homes.

Kids who are already covered by SNAP. Excess SNAP benefits that are sold or turned into cash through other means. The SNAP system is full of fraud.
My child with disabilities needs it for healthcare and other services. Without it, we would be bankrupt and lose our house. We make good money but not enough to meet the needs of someone with multiple disabilities.
We also do not want to see the USA go deeper into debt, to finance tax cuts for the super rich, as happened 2017-20.

That is not where cuts need to be made. That is what the system was designed, funded for. And kids are cheap (47% of enrollment, but only 15% of expenditures). What needs to be cut is able bodied adults covered by Biden and Obama expansions with no funding mechanism, and we need to investigate need (kids whose parents could cover them but remain unwed in order to qualify for Medicaid).

My father, who I've barely spoken to in 47 years, is currently going through the process of getting on Medicaid for long term nursing home care.
