I wonder what it'll mean for higher academic schools (maybe with great teams, maybe with weaker ones) that don't have full leeway to take whatever track / xc athlete they want. Stars excluded of course - a 3.0 gpa sub 3:50 / sub 13 athlete could probably go almost anywhere.
Obviously UNC is a good academic school but a very strong program so they (likely) won't take the 14:15-30 guys who might be cut from other rosters. But I don't think a stronger academic / weaker distance school (e.g. Duke) would take a 14:15 runner with a 3.0 gpa from a place like NAU even if he'd help the team a lot - their best times from 2024 were:
7:58 / 14:12 (indoor)
13:58 / 29:34 (outdoor)
I don't think many 14:15-14:30 athletes will be cut unless it's because the school has chosen to focus on sprints or something. 95% of schools would probably be able to use an athlete like that at least as their #5. He'd be our 5th best 5k guy honestly so that would help us in the fall most likely.
