Speed-wise, he's the slowest out of the big four. Strength-wise, everybody is catching up. Hocker just shocked the world with an indoor 7:23 in his only serious attempt. He could definitely get to around 7:20 outdoors, and Kerr and Nuguse may be even faster, so Jakob's only edge over his competitors is going out of window. Not to mention Kessler and Laros getting better and better.
I don't see how he would win another world title tbf.
I don't think it's over - but the window is getting smaller and the margins tighter than even for him - especially at a championships level.
I think your points are valid - guys are catching up in a variety of ways and will continue to. Either basic maturity or through their training - we are almost in an era of all-time competitiveness in this event.
But Jakob is still the only guy under 3.27.0 and that is not an easy stratosphere to enter. Can anyone else do that? Remains to be seen. I think he will run under 3.27 again this year - if someone else joined him I wouldn't be overly shocked in the same way I wouldn't be shocked if nobody did. Either way my gut feeling is that in a race where the field is asked to run at their threshold pace from 100m-1300m which is what all these DL races are set up for now, Jakob is still the best guy.
So how could he win the world title? Well we know - he has to replicate this on his own in the Tokyo final. He was unable to in Eugene, Budapest and Paris so it's not easy BUT, it is possible. I don't think we can definitively say he can't which means we can't definitively say he can't win one of these races at this distance ever again but yes, his margins for error in championship race are far finer than at least 3 of his main competitors.
And hey, September is a long way away. It's great to run 3.46 and 7.23 now, but there is a lot of energy to be expended - especially for Nuguse, Hocker and Kerr with GST, between now and then.
But yes, in terms of a basic narrative this will be his toughest test over the distance (to even replicate his previous silvers at the WCs) and it's only getting harder.
