More interest would increase the prize money. More ticket sales means more revenue directly. More ticket sales makes it easier to get sponsors or to get them to spend more money. More viewers on tv increase ratings, that increases the amount that can be charged for ads, and that increases the rights fees.
Went to a small indoor meet over the weekend. 4 lane track, using 3 for the sprints. There were 8-10 flights of the 200 for men and women. EACH. Then there was the 5000m (M and W) right after then the 4x400. My son and I watched the mile (preceded the 200s) and then he was ready to go (he is an adult not a kid) and had no interest in the 5000. Why is there even a 5000 INDOORS?
Just an example of some scheduling issues. But the meet did get my money (it was cheap).
