Who would have thought the Arkansas distance job wouldn’t be filled in the year 2024 and now has a place in 2025 thread. 6 months w/o a coach is wild for a team of that stature. Anybody have any news?
Even though the distance position at Arkansas is a great one having to work with Chris and Boogie would be problematic. Not exactly two guys who respect distance running.

Who wants to come in and just be a glorified GA for Lance Harter? He's still the distance coach, even if not officially. They should just be honest about it.

One would think a quality hire would alter that relationship.
The Convention is a complete waste of time and money. Haven't been in 15+ years and will never go again. Shmooze with your buddies and drink/play golf is what it is all about.

Hanging out with coaching friends you don't see often is the best part of convention. I don't do this, but I know a lot of people who go and skip most of the talks and just go to the bar. I go probably every other year and it's a great time. I go to most of the talks and learn a thing or two occasionally. It's a great professional development opportunity that my school pays for. I also enjoy hearing the hall of fame speeches and attending the Bowerman ceremony. Considering the cost of those two events and the fact that you eat for free, it's not a horrid deal. People expect convention to be free and then wonder why our sport doesn't make any money lol
Also, if the last time you went to convention was before 2010 your "data" simply isn't valid anymore.

I hear ya but it tends to be kinda corny. People who don’t normally dress up seem awkward and the bowerman is made to feel like something so much more than it is. I know i sound negative and anti-sport but Idk it just seems over the top. Then you see these coaches who act like they’re better than you and too good to speak to you unless you’ve coached an ncaa champion or something. Theirs a small group of elite coaches who everyone wants to glaze over and idk it just feels fake. I have always left the convention feeling like I was better off not going. Expect for when it was In Orlando and I was able to go to Disney and enjoy the city outside of the convention and meet locals.

It's a complete waste of time. Top coaches who go only show up to vaca and drink. The meeting and symposiums are awful.

Sam Seems and his USTFCCCA organization do absolutely nothing for track & field except charge $$$ NCAA schools to hand out awards.
This is false. Find yourself on a committee and you'll see all that Sam is doing. Also, the majority of your XC and Track awards are from the USTFCCA, not NCAA. The NCAA gives very few Fs about our sports. Let's get back to job talk.

I don't have the same experience as you. I'm usually not thinking about the "small group of elite coaches" and I certainly don't think about them so much that it ruins my experience. The fact that you use the term "glaze" makes me think you're probably pretty young and worried about that kind of stuff. Dressing up is always awkward for coaches since we spend most of our time wearing polos and quarter zips, and the Bowerman is AWESOME when you think about how the experience is for the athletes involved. They get to show up in a limo and feel like a celebrity for a night.
Some of those coaches are even giving talks at the convention which is awesome. I don't ever want to pretend I know everything so it's not to see coaches like that speak and either reinforce my ideas or add something to them.
It sounds like you just haven't had the chance to coach long enough to make many connections. I have a handful of close friends that go to convention every couple of years and I'm pretty excited to hang out with them and nerd out over distance running.

Don't bother. Usually the people saying convention "is a waste" are just cheap people who have no social skills so they pretend they're too good to go to make themselves feel better. I take a lot of pride in showing up and voting on different proposals and spending time in the breakout sessions with my conference and regional. If you don't take your own sport seriously, nobody will.

USTFCCCA is part of the problem. They are not a solution or close to it.
