Distance runners who can't break 80 might think it's a mid-distance race, but that's like hobby joggers thinking that the marathon is a three-hour event. Irrelevant to elite performance.

Watch an Olympic an 100m. That’s sprinting. Notice the running form. Now watch an Olympic 800m race. That’s middle distance running form.

Now, watch elites running 600m. Which does it look like, sprinting or middle distance running.

800m runners dominate the 600m, not sprinters. Therefore, the 600m is a middle distance race.

The 600m is most definitely not a sprint! If you think it’s a sprint, you don’t understand what sprinting is, nor do you understand how elite middle distance runners run relaxed at paces faster than you can ever dream of sprinting.

An elite 600m runner runs at pace 2-3 seconds slower than their 200m sprinting speed. They are not sprinting!

The form in a 23-point opening 200 is a lot closer to sprinting than it is to a 1500/5000 runner's race form.

People who are saying "but a mid-d runner holds the WR" are making my point for me, because Johnny Gray was almost an exclusive 800 runner, and simply could not be more different from Hocker. 1500 types are rarely much good in the 600, and when they are it is 800/1500 runners, not 1500/5000 types. Meanwhile, LOTS of 400 types have posted good 600s.

If asked their best 'real' event, do you think more of those guys would name the 1500 (like Hocker), or the 400 (like 43.6 runner Kerley)?

At the elite level, the 600 is too close to the 400, and too far from the 1500 for Hocker to stand a chance.

The guy wants big contract deals he has to back up his words. He is proving that he is a coward. Come on man. A few years back when I was in the military, I had a class leader in one of my schools that said if anyone has a problem with me speak up and square off. At the time I was maybe 155 soaking wet he was 220. I had an issue with him and noted to my barrack mates that if I had the opportunity to bust him in face, I would take it. I jumped up immediately and fought him. I got my a#$ kicked but not without bloodying up his face and giving him a few stitches in the process. The point is I backed up my words and it earned respect. Hocker if he challenges Kerley and backs down I don't respect him.

Since elites running the 600 often come through the 200 in 22-point, it's not exactly shameful to be slower than their fast relaxed pace.😅 (Congrats if you have a 22-second or faster 200, which I doubt.)

Let's look Duane Solomon at the fastest 600 runner since Johnny Gray, a rare 600 star who actually ran the 1500/mile.

400 PB: 45.98 = 23.0/200 avg

600 PB: 1:13.78 = 24.4/200 avg

800 PB: 1:42.82 = 25.7/200 avg

1500 PB: 3:48.29 = 30.4/200 avg

Mile PB: 4:03.26 = 30.2/200 avg

And you want to tell me that a 1500/5000 abilities are more relevant to the 600m than 400m abilities.😆😆😆😆😆 The 600 is much closer to 400m sprinting than it is to 1500m jogging. MUCH. If you don't know that, you must have never raced it properly.

Even Hocker's PB 1500 pace, 27.7 per 200, is nearly irrelevant to the mechanics or energy demands of an elite 600. The fact he thinks it would come down to "distance strength" shows how out of his depth he would be.

The world record for 600m is 1.12. That’s 12 second pace for 100m. There are 10 year old girls who can sprint 100m in 12.

Coach Gray did not sprint 12 second pace to run a world record for 600m. He ran as a middle distance race, several seconds slower than his 200m sprinting speed.

Note that by 1990 Gray is 30 years old and five years past his 800m best year.

Also, you posted a list of the top 600m times ever run. 95% of those guys are 800m runners, not sprinters. Are you seriously that stupid?

Cole Hocker is a distance runner with some speed, like most milers. His brace of PBs says it all. (1:45.6 / 3:27 / 3:48 / 12:58.)
