exactly this. Mantz has run 27 flat for 10k and 45 flat for 10 miles and he's running the same marathon times as Bill Rodgers, who ran in sh*tty shoes and was much slower and shorter distances
He's not running the same marathon times as Rodgers. Mantz is 206 minimum, maybe 205 on a flat course. Mantz ran 2:08:12 on the hill AF Paris Olympic course. Rodgers never broke 2:10.
Think of it this way.
May 6th 1954 Banister broke 4. Fast forward 35 years (1990) and the top American milers have never broken 4 and are running 4:10
Would you agree or disagree Americans running 4:10 suck or "ballers".
Listening to Mantz's interview it sounded like he was a little frustrated that the early pace was not a little quicker. Not to say that he could not have dictated the pace like the Africans do. He certainly finished faster in the late stages of the race and looked fresher than most at the finish line. Maybe he will take more chances in future for a podium finish even if risking a blowup.
Fastest American time ever at New York. Although Salazar ran 2:08:13 on a course 150m short. Pretty sure he could run 150m in 47 seconds.

Matz always has excuses
These aren’t excuses. They’re comments made by an elite trying to assess every facet of his race to determine how he can improve. You can’t criticize his time and then complain when he identifies things that prevented him from running faster.
Not up with the scuttlebut but from what I see the guy, though not elegant in form, is one tough hard-charging guy who is determined and relentless. Dont doubt that if he commited to a faster pace he'd maintain it to the end!

the thing preventing from running faster is rushing back from the olympics to run NYC instead of waiting to run a january or early spring marathon

yeah it's so amazing when white runners run mediocre times
So happy for him! I think he can podium next year.
If there are only 2 East African runners, maybe . . . It must be so discouraging for these guys, frankly I don't know what keeps them banging their heads against the wall for little money and no prospect of winning. At least for older hobbyjoggers like me, there is a chance of getting on the age group podium at a major. . . .
