Idc if they’re testing and keeping lactate low. That workout cooked them. Especially if they’re doing stuff like that regularly. At altitude. Carlson has a lot to learn.
Accidentally posted this as a new thread... it belongs here.
Remember when Colorado messed up the lives of about a dozen CC athletes because Carlson didn't want to develop them and instead wanted to "win now". They finished a spot lower in this year's Nuttycombe. Isaiah Givens had a tough race last year, by his own admission, and was slower this year. BYU and Iowa State (same conference as CU) cooked 'em. BYU put six guys across the line before Carlson could get one. Nice work, Rick George and Sean Carlson.
with the caveat of not knowing how teams approached this race and many were held out, time in general not that fast - but first race for many. Nice win by Sigsfed and sub 20 is decent time - but great conditions.
Last year, Nuttycombe was held two weeks later into the year. Under heavy rain and wind, in the mud and slop, with wind gusts exceeding 20mph, NCState’s Katelyn Tuohy ran exceptionally, breaking the old course record (if I’m not mistaken), finishing in a time of 19:29.5!
Winning time 19:55.7. NOBODY is touching Parker's 19:17.2 for a long time. Weather was bad last year, too. Puts into perspective how great that performance was.
To this point, compared to last year for places about 5-150 times were about 10-15 seconds slower than last year (despite better conditions). But 1st was almost 40 slower and 2 over 30 slower. Earlier in the season though. Top runners last year ran 6:20-6:30 for last 2K, this year more like 6:50.

But the much bigger story surrounding Nuttycombe 2023, was the unveiling of the brand new Parker Valby model, who ran 19:17.2 that day, in those conditions, absolutely obliterating the old course record in the process!

At timestamp 2:01 into that video, the demeanor of Parker Valby crossing the finish line in that incredible victory, is conveyed by a female bystander, “She’s not even happy.”
It was as if the Florida gal blew into town focused all business-like, to make a signature statement, “There’s a new sheriff in women’s NCAA cross-country, and I is it!”
Wow!!!! The Badgers aren't running anyone in the Championship race. Kind of a joke! I get resting them but hosting the meet and not running anyone!
Even if it is part of Mick's masterplan to finish 17th at Nationals, they should have communicated that they were not running. They made a mockery of their own meet. Imagine if the football team just decided not to play USC tomorrow.
Wolfe looked great! I think hes up a level in xc now too. It’ll be interesting to see how he does over 10k with the other top couple of guys. I’m guessing 3rd at ncaas
Is everyone else just sand bagging or is BYU just that good?
Well last year for 10K Ok St had a 1-5 spread of 20 seconds with the top guy in 4th. NAU last year was 32 seconds. BYU 1-5 was 38 seconds today for 8K. There is "that good" and "that good".

If we're using OK state's performance at nationals as the standard for "good", then no team's been good since 2005.

Weak stuff on a number of levels from Wisconsin/Byrne. They have not been a deep men's team, pretty much since Mick got their (even when they won NCAAs in '11, their #7 was 240th).
It's shown by their performance in the B race at Nuttycombe in years past. They can run their entire roster on their home course, while other teams pay ~$500 a person to have their #8-12 in Madison.
2023 B race: Zero athletes (22nd in Championship race; 5 guys in 189th or worse)
2022 B race: 10th out of 15 scoring teams (well behind powerhouses like Toledo and Utah Valley)
Said Michael did pretty well, Barea was leading the race by 6 seconds at the 6K mark, it was a gutsy race and they had one or two of their better guys sit out.
I'm impressed w/Washington. If 3 of their top guys are in the top 50 and none is Evan Jenkins, they'll do better than last year.
