What is Matson's advantage over Kostelnick?
The USF article says he googled the transcon record, saw Pete was from nearby, and figured that meant he could be just as good. Maybe that's the article writer fluffing up the story for the masses, but to a competitive runner it comes across as naive and/or disrespectful.
This is a theme with a lot of niche record attempts. A guy says "I have a modicum of talent/success in this field, so I should be able to be the best in the world." No one says that about things that they think are truly competitive. Like the 16% (or whatever it was) of people who think they could make the Olympics in the 100m, or the woman who thinks she ran 4 miles in 17 minutes because her wonky GPS told her she did and she "had a lot of pent-up energy that day," people truly do not understand what it takes to be a world-class runner.
...So they think elite performances are attainable for almost anyone.
...So an above-average (but not world-class) runner might think they can beat a record like this.
And what inevitably happens is that the runner starts out on pace, and at some point the difficulty of the task becomes apparent. The runner then either (a) calls the record attempt off (either quitting entirely or setting a more reasonable goal), or (b) cheats.
And since most non-runners don't know the difference between above-average talent and record-breaking talent, they won't believe (b) happened without a LOT of proof.
Hopefully Matson is extremely talented--his previous results are better than a lot of guys we've followed before, but don't jump off the page as someone who can definitely break the transcon record--and if he's not, hopefully he doesn't feel the need to cheat.
