There damn it... just not posting right today
1) Paavo Nurmi
2) Emil Zatopek
3) Peter Snell
Serously folks, in a sport so thoroughly dominated by African atheletes to even consder putting these 3 anywhere in the top 10..much less top 3 is laughable.
Much as I respect their accomplishments, they really are only a small footnote in distance running. The ONLY REASON they even held a record is because Africans werent running against them back then.
The only question should be WHICH African is number one.
How about Pheippides?
"Rejoice! We conquarrrrggghhh..."
Certainly not the greatest ever, but Renaldo Nehemiah should at least be mentioned. In the almost 30 years since he set his 110HH record, only .02 seconds have been taken off it.
what about Paula Radcliffe?

What's her best: 2:15? How many men have beaten that?
stupidest comment in a long time

No, it's appropriate.
I think that Michael Johnson is the best sprinter period. Nobody can come within tenths of a second of his 200 and 400 records.
As for the distances i would have to call it a tie between geb and Zatopek. Zatopek's 5k,10k, marathon triple is the greatest perofrmance in athletics history. Bekele seems well on his way to becoming the greatest though, drugs or no drugs, as he has won 10 xc championships, 3 world championships, an olympic gold and silver, 3 world records.
I can't belive no ones even mentioned Ron Clarke or Lasse Viren. Ron Clarke completely re-wrote the record books and Lasse Viren is the epitome of the olympics.
ivo vandamme certainly belongs to the list
You guys are all picking runers who have only been dominant for a few years. No one that anyone has named has had the 10 years of dominance...the 122 undefeated races as Edwin Moses has.

No, the previous comment about Radcliffe being one of the greatest runners ever was.
Xander Lanvader, hands down
i don't think that was a good comment either - i wouldn't put radcliffe as one of the greatest runners ever for reasons outside of her being a woman but your response of how many men did she beat was worse -we now compare men runners to women runners - since when?there is usually a women's olympics and wc's - women's running... if there had been an absolutely dominant women i would have no problem putting her up there with the great men

Since the title of the thread was greatest runner ever. That means we compare all runners of all ages, races, sexes, time periods, etc.
