I was watching on Peacock. Peacock has the international feed and the "Ongoing Coverage" feed, which is the American feed that skips across different events. IIRC, the ongoing coverage feed was broadcasting from the E! Network at the time.

I think the fact that NBC chose to edit out most of the post race silence pretty much proves my point.

Scully didn't utter a word for a minute+ after Gibson the gimp took Eckersly deep to in a walk-off win for the Dodgers. The Dodger crowd was going wild about their home victory after the drama built, Davis' steal of 2nd got the tying run in scoring position and Gibson had no more leeway at the plate. Not exactly what Goucher had going on. Grant ran well, but he wasn't at home (US), and didn't win. This takes nothing away from his exceptional performance, but the parallels between Goucher and Scully are very very thin at best.

NBC chose to edit it out because they figured the idiot masses of non-running fans would not "get it".

Once again, I think a simple camera pan over to her for 2 seconds visually showing her overwhelmed, red-faced, and speechless would have made up for the silence.

I'm going to agree with you. I love Kara's podcast, and I liked her book, but I really don't care for her as an announcer. She talks too much and often states the obvious (running on the rail is a shorter distance). She may be better than most of the NBC announcers, but that's a pretty low bar. We tend to mute the volume and just watch.

You should have listened to the live call on Peacock. The Brit announcing was sublime as usual. One of the best calls I've ever witnessed in recent T&F

I hated his announcing. Just too over the top IMO. Had to mute the TV and that was very much better.

I think Kara is a sweet person and a great runner and represented the U.S well. At first I was excited when I found out she was going to be in the broadcast booth but now not so much. Just because someone was an athlete and Olympian in the sport doesn't always translate to a great commentator. I feel she does her homework and is knowledgeable but she's not a natural and the way the excitement level in her voice stays at an elevated pitch for seemingly the last half of any and every race is distracting.

I disagree. I like Kara's commentary and think it's getting better over time. I remember how excited she got during the world championships in Eugene when Gidey showed that she did have a finishing kick. I want the commentators to care about the sport and show some emotion. Cold, clinical talk is boring.

I'm not one to call everything sexist; I'm not even referring to your comment as sexist. But there are clearly a lot of sexist criticisms of high-profile female runners. If they post on social media, they're accused of being "desperate for attention," even though it's almost certainly part of their sponsorship agreements. Any sign of confidence is viewed as arrogance. It seems to be worst for very attractive women, Kara Goucher included. I think a small subset of men on letsrun hate women and cannot handle seeing attractive women with female-typical personality traits who are capable of kicking their asses in sports. They resent their own attraction to this women and denigrate them because of it.

Kara and Des recorded a podcast last night and Kara mentioned in passing that she's not supposed to talk during the final 200 of any race plus during the immediate aftermath. So, again, this notion that she somehow dropped the ball is both factually wrong and a ridiculous take. And, yes, I think it reflects underlying sexism.

Guy cut her some slack. She was just like most of us. Crying or on the verge of it. It's not just that an American medalled. Its the character and the personality of Grant Fisher. Very likable, hard worker,smart just such a humble and unassuming young man who has put his heart and soul into his track career. Happy for the guy. Plus he is from the same county that I lived almost my entire life. Congratulations Grant

I will cut her slack, but I will not cut you slack for saying most of us were crying or on the verge of it. Maybe I am a sociopath or something, but l felt NOTHING other than the excitement of seeing a great race with a close finish. Why would I cry over this? Is this some kind of a joke I am missing out on?
