His high school classmates describe him as definitely a conservative

He is described as relentlessly bullied.

Let's accept that the right wing has been correct about something: We have a problem with mental illness. They say it is mental illness, not guns. I'd counter that it is the combination of mental illness with easy access to guns, a lot of young people that feel marginalized, and a desire to lash out against society.

I think this kid would have taken a shot at Biden as well, given half a chance.

The only thing notable about this is he was willing to take a crack at a fellow Republican, but that just means that a desire to go down in history was more important than political party to a mentally ill young man.

Absolutely this. It’s a terrible shame how the Trump camp will use this to attempt to invalidate warnings about the real threat he poses.

John Hinckley Jr. shot at Reagan because he thought it would impress Jodie Foster, so you can never be sure. But until something else comes out I’ll basically assume he thought a second Trump presidency would be a nightmare direction for this country, like a significant percentage of the world does, and thought he would be a hero if he could kill him. He very well might have thought that even if he was imprisoned for life or killed, it would be worth it both for doing a “noble deed” and to gain fame and stop being a nobody. Making a judgment like this is particularly easy for a young male with an underdeveloped frontal lobe. I’m absolutely not condoning what he did, but it’s also weird to me to view what he did as truly “insane.”

Sure it is possible. Remember Trump bullied a reporter who was disabled and he even bullied John McCain. I like my presidential candidates who have not been shot.
