Because, like Valby, Jaeger was next in line, and in-effect, possessed the Standard.
Actually, I just checked, and Jaeger did NOT possess the standard. A case, as you say, could be made for Rotich, who was next in line, and possesses the Standard.
So you were wrong regarding the facts but we are suppossed to trust you on a rule that we have never heard about? You haven't posted it.
Well, in the past, there seems to have been some changes in interpretation of their own rules. For example (check me on this), Adam Goucher was allowed to run the Trials when there were candidate(s) ahead of him. It seemed shady (but I’m fuzzy on the details, without going back and researching it.).
But as I said from the front, I’m not 100% positive on the USATF selection process for alternates.
Parker Valby is amazing, what gusts. Reminds me of a young Pre. She is also probably on her way to the Olympics since Elle St. Pierre in her interview doubts that she will double. Way to go Valby :)
This is an interesting situation for ESP. Cranny almost took her down in the 5K and if ESP has to also run the 1,500 in Paris, I can’t see ESP being competitive in the 5K at all. Seems like it would not be a good use of her best chances/efforts in Paris. While so much focus has been on Valby in 4th, I couldn’t help but wonder how ESP must be feeling about the result of her 5K vs. her abilities in the 1,500. Seems like the 5K is not worth it for her to pursue in Paris? My guess is that ESP got pushed a lot harder in the 5K than she was expecting…and now she’s gonna need to pull it together for the 1,500. Crazy things happening in these trials.

But I think actually possessing the standard greatly improves the credentials of a potential alternate candidate, but that’s just my opinion, since I haven’t found the rules.

Why on earth would anyone post anything they are not certain about? Waste of space.

Do your homework before coming on here!
People do that all the time on here.
I can assure you, whether or not her getting the standard made any difference into her credentials as an alternate, it nonetheless was a HUGE achievement, considering how difficult it can be to hit those standards.
I just watched the entire interview waiting for her to get snappy or rude with a reporter and it never happened. Weird post OP
exactly, it's like they think they know something and want to push a narrative. it's not really in there. this time.
i do think girls who look like her, stereotypically either bubbly barbie -- think cross country skiier jessie diggins who wears glitter and does little dances at the start line -- or blunt ice queen. i think based on this she's more ice queen end. i think a pretty girl who will set people straight is threatening to people.
I heard John Gault and maybe one other ask her about it but she didn’t want to give a firm answer. She said she will see how she is feeling and talk with her coach. Hopefully she can recover. I thought she would’ve been better suited for the 10K in the first place, but those two trial 5Ks can sap the legs pretty hard. Time will tell.
Read what I just wrote. If she had come in top three, then yes, her ranking would have been sufficient. But ranking alone while not having the standard, can be deemed insufficient when considering the credentials of the replacement. So if a replacement actually is to be selected, and if Valby did not have the standard, they could have passed on her, and gone down further in the list to consider the next person that actually had the standard. There happens to be another candidate down the list that finished the final and posses the standard.
That person is Andrews, so if Valby had not gotten the Standard, they may have selected Andrews as the alternate.
first of all why would you send someone who came in 11th into the Olympics? Andrews ran half a minute behind the leaders and looked like crap. Second of all Valby and others right behind her would have qualified with their WA ranking.
She would have made it on ranking. Running 14:51 or 15:00 didn't matter.

Well Valby got the standard and thank God we didn’t have to send someone who couldn’t manage to run under 15:00. he runners also have until the 30th to get the standard.
All of Valby's interviews leaves me with the feeling that she isn't well practiced talking with others or she may have some sort of social anxieties. I don't think she was rude. She was tired, a little disappointed, and probably just wasn't up to having the spotlight on her.
The whole process of answering dumb and repetitive questions 3 minutes after finishing a 5k is dumb anyway. Showed personality
Parker "I was proud of yourself and I ran my best race so I am happy"
Media "So are you happy with your effort?"
Parker "I ran my best race so yeah"
Someone hand the interviewers some better questions.
She was incredibly close to making the team. If the trials were six months from now, she may have improved enough by then to be able to cover the final surge and get a spot on the team. She ran a perfect race, PR-ed and hit the standard. But she ended up missing the team. She is very competitive and works as hard as anyone in the sport. She also has had to deal with some of the most vexing injuries and knows that she could be a much better runner today if she never broke her foot or had the weird nerve issue. So, after the race, having to field a bunch of peanut gallery questions from a press pool with a very wide net for credentials is not going to be fun at all. She is clearly heartbroken and understandably frustrated, but did a good job to just get through the interview.
Looks like the OP is fishing for signs of trouble when none is there. Someone (maybe the OP) tried to make a deal about her 10000 a couple months ago. Her interviews and demeanor are fine, better than most anyone. Certainly better than any letsrunner would do. WTF is wrong with some of you?
