Especially when the AD openly says he’s going to hire more women and black coaches. This is not Joanna Hayes’s fault. It’s just a dumb thing to say publicly from the AD
Joanna is most likely a sold coach. Was she the most qualified for Director of UCLA? No but she got the job and that’s how life works. The big question is who she surrounds herself by. Avery Anderson wasn’t a good leader and did a lust lacker job. She needs to pick her event coaches wisely if she wants to succeed.

This is the only true post. If she wants to actually succeed at UCLA then she needs to bring in other top coaches. I do think Joanna is a top coach too. I would be lying if I said I knew who worked with Avery Anderson. Will Joanna coach hurdles ? Who’s coaching jumps / throws ? Who will be your long sprints , distance coach , etc ? A true leader might flip things upside down at first but if UCLA wants to proceed at a National contender big changes need to happen.

It’s very expensive to live in LA on UCLA pay, with that the pool to choose from is smaller. She currently has some of the best recruiters in the country on her staff. I think she cuts some loose and keeps others. Some of the coaches on that staff have excellent relationships across the country and most certainly in California. As a high school coach and parent I appreciate some of her current staff.

The best move is to movie forward with her own staff. The program has been in shambles for years now. If there is a glimmer of hope it’s bringing in Hayes with a new staff. Honestly no one really worth keeping is currently on staff.
