I like Sydney, but even as a hardcore fan it's really hard to appreciate her accomplishments and get too excited about it. She is Bolt level greatness - why can't she and a few other star athletes generate the same level of publicity and excitement for the sport as Bolt? In other sports, you see even the lamest personalities rising to popularity... we have an overall lack of infrastructure for this kind of thing - the sport has been totally dead and isn't coming to the rescue of any athlete. On the other hand, it's 2024 and athletes can make fortunes by amplifying their popularity on social media. I don't even care about their popularity, but that is desperately needed. As a true fan, I care more about watching great competition and overall, sorry, she's really been relatively MIA.
main reason people don't like her is cause she doesn't race enough.
Been alright this season, but she never leaves the States so the races she does run are a bit random and against mixed competition.
Nothing track fans would love more than to see her just do a full season on the circuit ala Jakob
Don't you mean she doesn't race often?
Wtf is enough? Clearly she races enough for her, and her coach
Her results show that. Pardon her for not meeting your expectations, but she has the Olympics to prepare for.
Maybe you competed each week on the way to your gold medals?
Yeah I'd like to see more of her. I'd love to see her race more often.
But I'm not her coach so can't say she's not racing enough
Yes, maybe her and coach believe it's what she needs to stay fit and focused, but we are just pointing out that it ain't good for the sport if the biggest talents don't race often.
So you're either blind or stupid. One is white and black, they show her parents all the time. White mother black father. The other is 100% black. Good attempt at being stupid though.
Well his chemistry sure ain't working for Prandini or Kenni Harrison or Akinosun.
He must be given them bad batches or placebos or you are just a dumbarse.

I don't know how many of you are kids or what, but some of us are old enough to remember the 1980s. Kersee is not stupid; he learned his lesson years ago when one of his former athletes, Angela Bailey, outed him as a drugs coach during the Canadian Dubin Inquriy (in court, under oath, I might add...) Then another of his athletes, Darrell Robinson, publicly accused him of supplying his athletes steroids & HGH....and Kersee didn't dare to sue him, he just called him a lunatic. (what clean coach would allow someone to slander them in public and not sue?) He was always known as The Drugs Coach back then.
Thereafter he created his inner circle. If you aint on that list, you aint coming in, and you aint getting the special stuff.
He was still doing it in the 90s right up until this day, but like every other cheat he's had to get clever about it. No more injecting ridiculous amounts of drugs in the knowledge random testing didn't exist (RIP Flo Jo) it was finding the new drugs (think 'The Clear' & THG...it was that level) and nowadays it's being super clever with microdosing. Be careful about where you compete because they might test you. Only compete out of cycle. Just consume enough to get it out the system quickly.
There is absolutely no doubt McLaughlin is immensely talented. But there's also no doubt her coach was & is a stinkin' cheat.
So glad to see Syd with another great performance.
So nice to see the haters silenced again.
The main reason some wackos on here don't like her is because she’s a strong Christian and she often gives thanks to God.
When she does that it just drives them nuts!!
You're just another idiot LR troll, but the issues are worth discussing anyway.
Yes, rational people are annoyed by public figures who constantly spout proselytizing crap about god and Jesus, and stupidly pretend that 'he' has anything to do with their athletic performance, or which shoe they put on first, or any other utter triviality (in the 'big picture').
Devout Christians (or Muslims, or Jews, or Hindus, or whatever) aren't too bad if they're smart enough to keep it to themselves (Dathan R seems like a good example); when they insist on ramming it down your throat every 20 seconds, yes, it's incredibly annoying, and also really destructive.
It's entirely reasonable that might turn somebody off a little from rooting for a particular athlete. (Jim Ryun, for instance, is obviously an absolute giant of the sport, but listening to him interviewed is painful, cuz you know a big pile of Jesus crap is coming any second.)
Sydney's great, seems like a perfectly nice gal, is gorgeous, is clearly incredibly disciplined, and is an absolutely incredible talent. Obviously any real fan of the sport is gonna want to watch her compete, and be thrilled to see what she can do.
But the Jesus stuff is obnoxious, and she's a horrible interview --who clearly studied at the Derek Jeter Institute of how to never say anything but the stupidest, most utterly meaningless cliches, always with a totally flat demeanor that makes it seem like you have no actual human emotions.
And the Bobby Kersee svengali-sh*t is definitely a turn-off too --especially with his history of sleazy associations.
And, yeah, she doesn't race nearly enough --though obviously this season's been better so far. It'll be interesting to see if she completely disappears after the Olympics again.
As far as her actual performances --which is the interesting stuff to talk about-- today was amazing. Yes, she is gonna be even better this year.
48.7 on a windy day, this early, when her peak is probably still 6 weeks away, tells us she really does have a shot to break 48.
And god only knows about the hurdles. Sub-50 probably is plausible as well.
It's a privilege to watch her run. It would just be even better if she was a little more genuine and relatable, and was smart enough to keep the Jesus crap to herself.

They didn't work for Allyson Felix either. She should ask for her money back. I mean after winning a gold at Worlds as a teen, and running such great times at such a young age, one would think she would have been murdering sub 22 left right and center with all the alleged drugs her coach procures. Felix go get your money back.

It wouldn't bother me a bit for people to express their religious faith other than the fact that many of the Christians who support Sydney doing this would be the first ones to to tell a Muslim or an atheist to "keep keep that crap to themselves"... if they were to express their faith or lack thereof in a public manner.
It woulda been better if they had. A lot of people didn't really follow during non-Olympic years. On the men's side, we've already had an absolute banger of a Warholm vs. Dos Santos race, and in the 100/110m hurdles you can watch the best of the best nearly every week.
In the women's 400 hurdles, It would be great if you could see an actual competition involving the best athletes more than once per year. Plus, how is she gonna beat Edwin Moses' 100 race win-streak if she'll be in her 60s by the time she's run 100 races?
Very impressive. Going down the all time performance list for the women's 400, I would judge Sid to be the fourth fastest woman in history, accounting for drug cheats.
Kaczmarek just won Euros in 48.98 with a semi the day before, Adeleke ran 49.07 the same way with a relay leg in the mixed as well, Jamaican Nickisha Pryce 48.89 at NCAA.

I have Syd as 5th fastest Who do you think was the drug cheat Perec?
She is a young Christian. She is also young. Give her a bit of time as she will inevitably face harsh disappointments and she may come to understand the circumstances of life better. Or perhaps not because Christians are no different from anyone else with cognitive dissonance.
I read somewhere that Felix did several cryings in tunnels when she did not win 200M Olympic golds especially in 2008 when she went in as the clear favourite.
