I think it’s great way someone isn’t afraid to make a bold statement. And you wouldn’t expect someone with the status of Jakob to dive in desperation for victory. But I think by the time the Olympics arrive he’ll be in gold form. He happened to take his age and ability for granted but now will realize every year as he ages. He’s got to work a little harder. I do think he’ll win gold in the Olympics realizing he has to put in some work.
An injury can be a blessing in disguise: good for motivation, good for rest from overtraining and addressing training weaknesses. At this point we can be certain that several runners have 7:23 3000 capability, but JI has the advantage of not having to overrace before the Olympics. Still not sure he is the current favorite in 1500 or 5000m.
I would not be surprised if Jakob leaves Paris this summer without any Olympic medals.
He will be in the mix in the 1500 and the 5000. That is not in question. It is possible that he gets beat (as we have seen) but to predict he's off the medal stand is a bad bet.
I would say he is "top three" in his two events and that is proven by his results year in and year out. He will medal.
But he is so good and so feared/respected/hated that the only "win" for him is double gold. That is, of course, a compliment to him. His last two WC Gold+Silver results have been seen as huge failures. Setting the bar that high tells us what we all expect from Jakob.
I like Hagos in the 5 after last night but I worry about his age and getting through the rounds fresh. I like Kerr in the 1500 (obviously), but I really like Jakob in both events...
