200 lbs doesn't have to be an insane weight, body fat % would be a better measure. I know pleanty of in shape people over 200 lbs that probably have 6% body fat.
In 2012, BMC Public Health reported the following average weights by region. The averages were calculated using data from 2005, and relied on combined statistics for men and women: North America: 177.9 pounds Oceania, including Australia: 163.4 pounds Europe: 156.1 pounds Latin America/Caribbean: 149.7 pounds Africa: 133.8 pounds Asia: 127.2 pounds

Genuinely surprised Europe isn't higher
Height is a big factor in weight and many southern Europeans are shorter on average. and if Eastern Europe is included, it's the more impoverished part with thinner people. It's really only WEstern and northern Europe that has heavier and taller folks.
How do we know there isn't just one bloke in nevada or something who is accidentally made of a neutron star? Maybe without neutron-star jeremy the average weight in the states is a svelte 175??

Average is just a made up number which is actually far far far worse:
For every skinny runner who's 136 lbs dripping wet, there's someone else tipping the scales at 256 lbs.

Why was a post linking to to red states being more obese removed by mods?
I was struck recently by a Fox News report using Center for Disease Control statistics that listed the top 10 states with the most obese percentage of people residing in
I love the movie Wall E for a lot of reasons. One is they perfectly predicted the future fatness of the human race. One day everyone will just go around on little platforms that carry them everywhere. Where I live, every kid has an e bike. Nobody has a regular bike. It’s already beginning. I love it.
Overall I applaud Michelle's attempt to make his healthier but let's not pretend the laws put in place by her husband were all that well thought out.
Every kid's school lunch should include a vegetable but if you allow ketchup or a pizza sauce to count as that vegetable you've just negated your own good policy.
Had the law required every lunch to include an actual vegetable and actual piece of fruit as opposed to things like ketchup or fruit slices packaged in syrup it would have been a good bill.
My son's private school mandates one raw or steamed vegetable and one piece of fruit in its natural form (such as an orange you have to actually peel or an apple you have to bite into) with every lunch and I think that is good policy.
Why do you think we need the government to keep us from being obese? Americans love excess, plenty of fat rich people here that know better and can afford expensive, healthy food
You can eat healthy on a budget. I’m in my 40s and have never weighed more than 165lbs at 6’1”. Anyone can go for a run and do body weight exercises. I don’t eat that healthfully, but I don’t eat a huge amount of calories and I run a fair amount.
If we cut out sugar and alcohol in our drinks, our number would drop significantly, especially in young people.
Actually, you're dead wrong if you think the government isn't partly to blame for the problem. Think about which industries the government subsidizes more (corn and sugar). This in turn allows affordable mass manufacturing of cheap products rich in said ingredients. Note affordable. So we establish now that lower income people are more likely to over-consume those ingredients. So you now have a population of people developing metabolic syndrome and insulin resistance, on the path to Type 2 diabetes and other disorders influenced by insulin insensitivity.
Insulin insensitivity eventually leads to over-production of insulin and promotion of fat storage, thus making it harder to lose weight. The children suffer the most as they have less control over dietary decisions made by their parents.
If the government subsidized healthier food industries more, then those healthier options would be more affordable and accessible to the average American family.
Additionally there are other areas where the government has overwhelming control. School lunches are set by the government and based on the food pyramid...which we now know is wrong because of it's over-emphasis on carbs and grains and tiny emphasis on healthy fats, meat and oil. So we have millions of kids on public school lunch programs being ruined for 12 years of consumption of school lunches.
And let's not forget the prison system. The prison system nutrition plans are also developed by the government.
Oh and I can go on. Lax regulations by the government means the industry can use obesity-promoting artificial additives and plastics. Science has shown that there are chemicals in our environment that we can't avoid that have an impact on cell metabolism. The problem in America is multi-faceted simply put.
Only the lazy rely on the government to fix their problems. I despise our governments food and farm policy but I take control of my own health and don't wait for them to fix it. I take control of my child's health and don't wait for the government to fix it.
I also take care of my own economic health and while it's obvious government policy affects things like my investment portfolio I don't sit around waiting for the government to hand me things to take care of me economically.

Could be, but there seems to be tremendous strides being made in weight loss drugs. Not my area of expertise, but let's be real - it's only a matter of time until they have pharmaceutical ways of losing weight. I think there's some now but they are very very expensive, though I could be wrong. But the writing's on the wall - only a matter of time.

Yes, an orange or apple you can vape would probably not be that good.
The average height and weight of American Samoan men - 177cm (5′9) and 103.2 kilograms (227 lbs). The average weight and height of American Samoan women - 167cm (5′5) and 98.1 kilograms (215.8 lbs).

No you don't. Very few people are 6% body fat.
Even give them 4% for what ever method they use that underestimates fat, there aren’t that many 200lb 10% guys walking around. There aren’t enough skinny muscular guys to matter when looking at population averages.
Go walk through Walmart for 10 mins and let me know if you think americas problem is they are too muscular…
Big Mike ushered in the highest rates of lunches being thrown in the trash that schools have ever seen!
This is accurate. I saw it first hand. I taught at a public school, and 2/3 to 3/4 of kids were getting free or reduced price lunch. Before they punched in their student ID at the checkout, they had to take a fruit and veggie. I would imagine more kids ate a fruit or veggie bc it was on their plate, but a large amount wouldn't eat it. Left on the bleachers, benches, ground, or in the trash was a massive amount of apples, pears, etc. or spinach, okra, broccoli, etc. daily...... day after day after day.
I liked the lunches enough to buy the meal, and I gladly took fruits and veggies...because it was healthy and easy-right there for the taking.
Really incredible . . . and not in a good way. In 1960, the average weights were 140 and 166 per the CDC. So, 30 pounds heavier. Sad.
That's weird - I grew up the 60's. We didn't exactly eat the healthiest as people think we did. Bottled pop & candy bars were a big deal (Pepsi Cola & Snickers 😏). I had them every day. Meals at home were a lot of high-carb dishes. We had spaghetti & baked bread loaded with butter for dinner like every other night. Lol. And I pounded down huge amounts of food as a kid growing up. Pastries were a favorite of mine.
Sure, we didn't have video games & smartphones to mess around with, and with the primitive TV back then, there wasn't too much watch. So, we were outside playing fairly often, riding bikes, throwing the frisbee, etc, but not for hours & hours like people think we did. Hanging out & listening to records in our homes & talking on the old-fashioned rotatary phones was getting popular. Lol.
So, there must be something else going on other than diet & excercise with today's obesity problem. 🤔
