Official Idaho HS XC 2024 Thread

Eagle fell apart hard at the end of the season. They had a girl run 19:55 at Caldwell and 18:12 at Woodbridge that ended the season with 21:24 and 21:55 in the last two meets of the season. If you count just the Idaho teams in the Elite race at Firman, they were 4 points behind Mountain View, 11 behind Timberline, and 3 up on Owyhee. They do also have the 6th fastest 5A returner at Firman and it's not Reeder. If you count NXR, Baruch is the 10th fastest returner from last year.

They do return a better set of 1600 bests- 5:25.65 vs 5:45.33, but Reeder skews that a bit. The 2-5 returners are at 5:29.15 vs. 5:41.27 heading into this year. The problem is that Rocky, Timberline, and Boise suck up 3 podium spots immediately and Capital and Owyhee are going to be better this year as well and I think still better than Eagle.

My prediction is Rocky, Timberline, Boise, Capital for podium.

That’s interesting. Someone in the track thread also asked whether Wyatt Carr’s dad will step down as a CDA coach after Wyatt graduates.

I think it would be hard to be a coach for long after your kid graduates. I'm not sure if Emry has younger kids or not, but I wouldn't be surprised.

I don't think Jeff is going to step down anytime soon. According to interviews, they live off of Jeff's teacher salary and coaching is another ~$9k per year of household income. Maybe when Marisa retires from running and goes back to work full time, but I think he really loves the sport.

Looks like the Rocky boys finished the track season tied for #1 in the nation in terms of # of boys sub 10:30 for 3200m!

They finished 7th for sub 5 milers.

Boise was around ~50th for both categories.

Any predictions for where the class of ‘25 Idaho runners go? Any rumors going around on where they are headed?

So far, Stadtlander, Max CS, and Jack Sheesley seem like the strongest D1 candidates. Lucas, Zach CS, and Corbin J. seem likely to run somewhere if they want.

On the girls side, Taylor and Johnson have mid D1 speed ratings.

Others I’m missing?

Could be a very tough heat for recruits with the drop in roster spots though.

Stadtlander is already committed to Oklahoma State. Lucas is LDS, but I don't know that he's a BYU scholarship runner. Should be able to walk on, though.

I've heard the Cervi-Skinner brothers to Gonzaga.

Do we know about Boise state? It's not very competitive right now, but hopefully under a new coach they will recruit locally.

I could see a bunch of "mid tier" runners, guys like Samuel Jensen, Lachlan May, Thomas Stevens, Jacob King, ect. who could be local recruits to rebuild Boise state into a team that makes nationals on a regular basis.

Jacob King, Samuel Spencer, and Thomas Stevens are all LDS. Not sure about Lachlan May. Jacob Stevens was the salutatorian at CDA so I would guess he’s going to BYU. He might be able to walk on. Lachlan May was also the salutatorian so if he is running it would likely be at a good academic school.

Boise State will be in the mix for bigger names than those guys. I would imagine Sheesley, Lucas, Paisley Taylor, etc. will be the type of local kids they go after. There’s a good chance Rilyn Stevens would have ended up there if the staff had turned over a year earlier. As for a Rocky pipeline, I could see the high end kids ending up there but I think most of the best kids have been LDS and would be looking at BYU. Last years class would have been interesting to see who ended up at BSU with Kemper, Helder, Ringert, McOmber, Blaser all being local.

The Cervi Skinner brothers just got back from a recruiting trip that included visits to Oklahoma State and North Carolina.

Pat Tyson is living in CDA trying to close this deal for the Zags.

Rietze looks like he is hurt and could miss the upcoming XC season.

This could possibly hurt their chances of making NXN. But they won NXR last year without May scoring.

They still have 3 sub 9:20 guys. Even if Rietze cross trains and only runs NXR they should be the third best team at worst.

Yes, and also Rohlinger and Heule who would be their 4&5 without Rietze.

Problem is, they don’t have as much depth beyond that, so their top 5 need to be on when it matters

Walking on at BYU is basically joining the farm team, which is big and looks like a lot of fun for those kids. They’ve sent a couple to the varsity squad, but these days the bar is extremely high for how good they’d have to get.

New roster limits means they are going to have to be even more cutthroat. Last I heard, you needed 9:00 or 4:05 to walk on at BYU, for a scholarship something like 8:4x and 4:00.

With the rise of Utah from a solid XC state to the most dominant one, BYU might be able to fill their entire roster with local guys from Utah guys alone.

I heard that the BYU 2019 XC Championship team that won NCAA's consisted entirely of guys recruited within 30 miles of the school.

The roster limits + Utah being as good as it is, might cause a lot of these high caliber Idaho guys and girls to be forced to Boise State, Utah State, ect.

Hopefully with Idaho growing stronger by the year, teams like C of I, U of I, and CSI can become more competitive.

This dataset is awesome, however with Oregon running 1500/3K, some of the best regional teams aren't showing up in the results (Crater, Jesuit, etc.). Any other states race the 15 instead of the 1600?

Indoor Track in Boise?

I have a few athletes moving to Boise and looking to get some winter work in at an Indoor Track.

Is there and Indoor Track that Club (or unattached) runners can use? If so, what Club would you join in Boise?

Would that be Idaho Dash and coach Howell?

You hardly ever see Boise clubs at USATF events. Spokane has two clubs and so does CDA. Why is that? Just curious.

IIRC, Boise State had an indoor track but recently sold it. I’m not aware of another indoor option.

Honell moved away and Dash folded. They all pretty much wore out their welcome in the valley because they would recruit athletes from other schools at meets.

Spike Up Athletics and YMCA Team Idaho are still around. Orchard Athletix is still here but really focuses on sprints and hurdles, and then Stacy Dragila has her group for pole vault as well.

Boise State may get a new indoor track at some point now that there has a been a coaching change. I have zero idea where they could put it.
