I didn't dislike running, but my situation made it tough. I ran a 4:10 mile as a soph in 1976 and place 3rd in my state meet. This was not good enough for Dad who had forced me to run in the first place. I received a severe beating for my 3rd.
My Dad would be in jail today as you can't play whack-a-mole with your spouse and kids. My Mom went to the police station twice with physical trauma but they sent her home. The world was different back then.
I ended up running 3:40 1500m, not very good for a 4:10 sophomore in HS, but you can imagine I had a lot of things on my plate. To complicate matters, I was a really good student and Dad hated this. I entered the State Science Fair and won it! I just forgot to tell Dad about my entry and I paid the price with a beating. It was not a running activity!
My college coach and running saved me. He wouldn't let me go back home in summer and presented me with a job that I didn't ask for. He was a noble guy. He only mentioned my Dad once (he let it slip that he wasn't a good guy), but he saw nothing good from talking down my Dad.
I knew that I was a trouble, John Gregorek's HS coach scratched out a note to me at Golden West telling me that if I needed help, he could talk. How did he know?
I never talked to Dad after my college graduation. He never knew my wife orhis grandkids.
But the main point here is that coaches can change someone's life. For all the coaches here, you are in a position to change lives.
