I went to a clinic a couple years back listened to Timo Mostert and he just runs a lot of miles and sprints up a hill once a week. His team doubles 5 days a week at altitude and that’s about it. He was misusing terminology about training and the body. It sounded really bad. I actually thought he was kidding at first, but he was serious. He's yet to win a national XC championship despite multiple number one ranked teams. He gets his kids to believe but can’t get his kids ready when it counts. I’m sorry, but it’s true and he was hard to listen to.
What are you on? Go talk to one of the AF kids or follow the program around at practice, this couldn't even be called a misrepresentation because this is not at all what they do. Where did you come up with this? The idea they "double 5 days a week at altitude" and "sprint up a hill once a week" and then just do easy miles? 60-70 miles is a lot by JV standards but plenty of high school kids run that much. If you aren't a troll, why do you have such a desire to paint their coach and program in a negative light?
What hurts friend? Timo has accomplished more as a coach than you ever will and his athletes the same. Why all the hate towards the least controversial program/coach to exist?
I’m not sure why you’re getting so angry and upset. Timo has not won a cross country national championship and had the tools and athletes To do it. Thats on him. Yelling he has more accomplished than you is not addressing the elephant in the room. Timo uses wrong terms all the time and it’s comical. He’s like he uses physiological terms to act smart and since you doesn’t use them correct it makes him look dense. He calls long runs capillary runs. It’s painful and funny at the same time.

AF absolutely just grinds miles and altitude. They live for their doubles. Doug Soles used to run lots of 8miles in the am and 8 miles in the PM. Now he gets to grind miles at altitude like Timo at AF. Brosnan just didn’t give a sh!t and did his own thing. Newbury Park went to altitude for a month in the summer and trained like an elite group spending thousands of dollars and all the little things.
Bottom line is Brosnan has never had ANY success without at least one Young and Sahlman on his team. EVER. He has never done it at any point in his life. Was he just waiting until his 40’s to show his brilliance? Why did his team miss the state meet in his 2nd year coaching? 9th place in his 1st year?
You’ll never know if Brosnan could do it at another school, because he never has. Soles proved he could. You just think Brosnan could.
The Youngs and Sahlmans had as much to do with Aschbrenner’s Appleford’s, etc success as Brosnan by being so hard working and creating a great training group that raised the level for the entire team.
Bro Brosnan has never been a coach without at least one Young on the team. His first year coaching was Nico's freshman year. Nico's senior year was L&L's freshman year. He wasn't waiting until his 40s to show his brilliance, he showed it about 4 years after starting. I absolutely think Brosnan could do it at another school. He had decent results at UCLA while he was there for less than a year. Shame we didn't get to see if he could make NCAA champs out of it. Maybe if he can't get another coaching gig going, he will go back to HS and do it again. Who knows.
He talks in an interview (probably the HDrunners 2019 NXN video) about his progression with the team. When he started, he told his athletes that after 4 years, if they followed him, they'd win a state title. His first year, after not qualifying for League champs in 10+ years, they won it. His 2nd year, they missed the state meet, and he said it was his fault. He made mistakes and he learned a lot from them. The next year, they won the state meet. The year after, they won nationals.
I think the fact that they didn't even make the state meet in his 2nd year, he acknowledged his failures there, took responsibility for it, and then the next year they came back and won state, points to him being a good coach. A good coach isn't someone who makes no mistakes, it's someone learns from their mistakes. I pointed out that Soles had an immediate (and faster) impact at Herriman exactly for that reason. Soles was coming in with far more experience than Brosnan. Brosnan had to make some mistakes at first, just like literally anyone ever. What's the Edison quote? "I didn't fail at making a lightbulb 1000 times, I just found 1000 ways to not make a lightbulb before I figured out how to make 1" or something to that effect?

Brosnan's mistakes in his first two years was the fact he didn't have enough Youngs and Sahlmans. He corrected it by having more Youngs and Sahlmans.
You can say all the reasons you think he is so great, but the fact is, he has never had success without them. Yeah, would have, could have, blah, blah, blah. Until he does it without them, you will never know. He never did it before and hasn't done it since.

Success of others huts the lowest. Brosnan’s one year at UCLA had more distance athletes competing at NCAA’s getting all American then most top distance programs.
I urge you to take any coaches top two families out of the lineup and it will of be less impressive. That argument makes no sense. If a coach is successful it’s because of the athletes and if he fails it’s because of the coach. Coaching top athletes to success if not an easy task and Brosnan did that as good as any top coach ever seen. Brosnan helped reshape running in HS and did a very impressive job last year in the NCAA. I’m stoked to see him coach this fall and get back to doing what he does best. The US needs more coaches like Brosnan and less jealous coaches who do nothing good for the sport.
Brosnan is the best coach ever seen in High School. I’m not asking the question who has the longest good career. It’s who’s the best and Brosnan changed the High School game and smashed the bar. No one did what Newbury Park did in 6 years under Brosnan.
We all knew Brosnan wasn’t going to stay in High School for years on end. He doesn’t have the temperament for High School and he created something never seen before and maybe never seen again. He literally changed High School running.
I don’t personally don’t know Brosnan, Soles or Mostert but if you want to run fast Brosnan is the best choice hands down.

He's yet to win a national XC championship despite multiple number one ranked teams. He gets his kids to believe but can’t get his kids ready when it counts. I’m sorry, but it’s true and he was hard to listen to.
Maybe Mostert talks about the same things at all clinics. I saw him speak here in Colorado and it was painful. I’m not saying he’s a bad coach. I know his seems to never get it done at the National championships but he’s solid for those kids. But after listening to him it makes me wonder why he didn’t learn what some of his terms he used actually mean.

Well, when Brosnan has success without the Youngs and Sahlmans I guess he’ll prove you right. Until then, the fact is he hasn’t ever been successful without them.
if you take the top two families from Soles, Timo, Walt Lange, Newton. Aris, and many more and they still would have been legendary.

Give the guy a break he’s a math teacher who helps kids. They asked him to speak and it’s a struggle for some to get in front of others and sound good. All this hate at Mostert, Soles and Brosnan is just some coaches trying to justify others success they can’t have or will never have. There is no such thing as luck it’s what excuse others use to justify their failures. It’s really that simple. No one wins National titles and and breaks national records because of luck

I guess your definition of success is different than mine. His employer sure didn't think he was successful and his team didn't win anything. The XC teams didn't qualify for NCAA's and they weren't any better than they were a handful of years ago. In track, they had a few people improve, a few have season ending injuries and for most, no real change. You may think he did great at UCLA, but getting a pretty mid team to maybe a little better than mid is hardly indicative of greatness.

Look at Aris’s teams now.
The boys and girls rosters are each in the single digits now.
Boys team finished in the middle on the pack at sections.
Girls team wasn’t close to the top 2 at the NY state meet.

Are you mad Brosnan destroyed your team ? Or maybe his girls team after a few years that won the state championship, broke a National relay record beat you girls team ? Or Maybe his 4:36 Newberry Park girl beat your daughter ? They did darn well being coached by Brosnan and all had different last names. Its hard to find coaches as successful as Brosnan and the truth is the better he does the more we see bottom dwellers cry. Its unfortunate that that you can’t move on

Hey Smart Words, can you explain to us what causes blood capillary development and why long runs wouldn't cause capillary development? Please use some smart words in your explanation.

All eras come to an end. COVID hit New York particularly hard, just look at how much they've fallen off across the board. The fact of the matter is that FM from 2004-2019 completely dominated high school running and the total achievement of Aris' tenure dwarfs Brosnan. Newton is the only one that compares. The Kranicks and Soles are also clear of Brosnan. And none of them did it with their top 5 runners coming from just two families.

Brosnan coached the best HS team in history and destroying records for both the boys and girls. These are all valid points the haters ignore. And the crazy part is Brosnan rarely ran relays and they still broke records. If I wanted my kid to run fast I pick Brosnan over any other HS coach that existed. A complete legend who rewrote the record books.

FM never really had big numbers, but having a small team roster, especially this small (the size of the 2023 FM rosters) can be tricky if a team wants to be successful.
Aris’s training is so demanding that not many people at the school would bother giving a try. That’s why the roster sizes have been so small. The only people that stick with it are those who are willing to become elite
Not two milers..of those they have 3 4th guy converted up is 9:01.x. There is a marginal difference and needs distinction.
Imagine thinking that the 3200 and 2 mile are such drastically different events that you have to take time to call out people in any and every thread where the distinction was not made by the OP
