An elegant solution to the Shelby suspension problem

Here's a really elegant solution: ban her for life for how stupid of an excuse she gave. Not like she's going to be worth anything when she comes back

She fell foul of anti-doping rules, she pays the price.

Whoever said Richardson's marijuana ban was a greater offence is a fool. Whoever said she missed the Olympics because she was banned is too - she missed the Games because of the US' selection policy - she was given a short enough ban to permit her to run, but her qualifying performance didn't count since that was the event at which she pissed hot. Any other country in the world would have selected her (unless we're talking about one where she'd be sitting in a cell... plenty of those for weed still).

The punishment would only be unfair if other banned athletes were allowed to serve their bans in segments so that they can compete in the races they most want to compete in. If what you want to do actually was done for her it would be unfair to EVERY other athlete who misses events s/he really want to compete in.

You think her situation is unique and I gather it's because two Olympics will happen before her ban is up. Yes, that is different from your normal four year ban. But again, she could have been eligible for Paris if that's what mattered most to her.

It’s not an unfair punishment. She cheated. She got a 4 year ban. That’s what’s in the rules for a high caliber cheat.

Furthermore, even without Covid, a person can miss two Olympic if they get caught during the window between the trials and the Olympics.

Example: If Athlete A qualifies for the Olympics this year, and then gets a 4 year ban, they would miss the upcoming Olympics. Then, in 2028, they would presumably miss the trials.

Screw Shelby and her Olympic ban woes.

Many Olympics ago, I trained my ass off for 10 years only to come up 1 second short of the A standard for the Trials in my event and did not get in with my B standard mark.

I got on with life and stopped competing soon after. During that time, I never once considered using a PED. In fact, I never thought anyone else was doing them either. I just assumed I wasn’t talented enough, durable enough, or work hard enough, but was still proud of myself to have gotten that close.

I never got a chance to compete in even one Olympics, but at least I know that I didn’t cheat others out of the opportunity.

she did not get thrown in jail or executed or persecuted disproportionately by a governing body, her rights as a human being were not drastically stripped away. she may feel that she lost a part of herself and I'm sympathetic to that except:

she participated in an elite sport in which thousands of people sacrifice substantial portions of their lives to participate in and very, very few get to compete at the pinnacle of said sport. her doping suspension continues to raise eyebrows but in the grand scheme of things it is/was not a right to run in circles for (in her case as an elite American sponsored by Nike) a living. it is a unique privilege and it takes hard work, but the belief that many including myself have is that the magic of watching the ceiling for human potential raised becomes stale when PEDs are involved, full stop. whether she knowingly took a substance to enhance her performance we will probably never get to a consensus on...but the infraction was deemed to have broken the rules and potentially gave Shelby an unfair advantage over others. that is the only injustice here. if you ARE being serious you might want to consider that any lack of fairness in this situation pales in comparison to how it may have felt/feels to be a clean athlete competing against people you know to be taking/suspect of taking PEDs and conclude that your advocacy may be better spent elsewhere

we know the likes of Athing Mu benefitted by being a year older, but are there other dopers that finished their ban, probably while getting back on the juice during Covid like shelby - then went on to qualify and succeed?
