GREAT post Anon Rex...
as for this rebuttal, I'll take a stab at responding:
"You weren't paying attention. She spoke in many podcasts about the doping control issues. She spent a lot of money trying to fight this but at some point you run out of money and have to accept your suspension. Do you think challenging these decisions is cheap and free? Just because you don't pay close attention doesn't mean that she wasn't trying. You just made all of that up without knowing what's going on in her day to day life."
If she was actually trying to change something, we might hear something about that. But the truth is, the system is fair. She tested positive. Nothing nefarious. Just a positive test for a commonly used banned drug. In a podcast she argued her "character" should be taken into consideration. No it shouldn't. That's bias. She argued that they should be "working together to figure out the truth". Why would they when the truth could very well be that she cheated? And then she advocated for mental health resources for cheaters. Yawn.
The original phrasing in the press conference was basically them grasping at straws trying to figure out HOW the substance got into her system. They revealed that they believed it could be from that burrito. They didn't unequivocally state that it was 100% the burrito. They were at a loss for words and this was the only thing she could think of. I'm not saying they were telling the truth, but this is just what was said at the start. The media and forums took it and ran with it.
The media and forums ran with what exactly? I don't recall them saying they were grasping at straws. I recall them fully backing the burrito excuse as if it was something that absolutely should have been accepted and it was a total injustice it was not. They didn't say "this might be what it is" they stated it WAS. It was such a stupid excuse that of course it was going to be clowned.
If you were waiting on an appeal, you would enter the trials as well. You never know if it gets uplifted quickly and then you'd feel really dumb if it was and you weren't entered in the trials on time. It was a "doesn't hurt to try" scenario...OBVIOUSLY.
It was a stupid rule and I blame USATF mostly for this. But I think that was the moment that really a lot of people turned on Shelby.
The whole training stuff with BTC was shady and it seemed like eventually they realized it wasn't going to work. Not sure why they attempted that but I guess when all of your teammates are on your side they're mostly okay with you coming around. The people with issues left.
The people with issues were there and were bothered by it and appealed to the coach for another solution, and were not heard. They didn't leave. they had to train with her. Then they left, exposed the situation, and after it was made public, Shelby cut ties.
Now that she's served her ban she deserves to race. That's the penalty. I can't wait to see her race again. I also don't really care if she does or not. So much has happened in the sport during her ban that I'm not sure if she'll get back on top.
I think she can race again too, but I'm not excited about it.
