Hiltz got a lot of applause at the meet comparatively to many athletes. Good to know Letsrun haters are not indicative of the greater track fan sentiment.
Agreed. I did not know what the reception would be and to be honest I was curious, but Nikki got more applause than anyone in the men's or women's 1500m. Nothing like Lyles obviously, and to be fair it could have just been a big personal cheering section (the Beasts for instance always got a lot of applause with their team posted up in one spot, but even Wynne didn't get the reception Hiltz did).

That’s funny. I attended the Prefontaine Classic a few years back and vividly remembered a few people actively booing Caster Semenya - a person who actually had no control over her situation.
The only time it works when describing a singular person is when you're referring to a hypothetical person whom you wouldn't know who you're talking about, which are all in the examples that you've mentioned. Since we know who the person is, they/their is incorrect.
You are correct but more so because it is unknown if it is a male, female, or group. If it is known that it is one person, you should say that "he or she" left it her as opposed to "they" left it here.
If you say "that woman over there" to denote Nikki Hiltz, 100% of people will understand who you're referring to. This is because she is an adult human female, an adult human females are called women.
I’m a Nikki fan. I don’t understand non binary identification, but defend Nikki’s right to claim it. The problem I have with announcers using they/them during a telecast is it’s confusing to the listing audience. “They(non binary runner) need to open up a bigger gap because they're(the other runners) gaining on them(non binary runner).”
Don't be obtuse. If poeple don't take massive doses of cross-sex hormones, you can clearly identify their sex in under a second, even when they're fully clothed. Here's a shocker: we also know the sex of strangers when we're talking to them on the phone, don't know their name, and have never seen them.
This state senator could not tell the sex of the child he was talking to.
I’m thrilled for Hiltz. Sorry but those who complain about the hate towards other runners and don’t understand the animosity towards one or two, Nikki has had the most hate out of anyone. we should be happy we have an incredible standout representing USA. Get over yourselves with the pronouns.
I agree and maybe they are the answer to the question of who should compete against who:
She is non-binary but biologically a female. They compete against females.
If they are non-binary and biologically a male compete against males.
If you are transgender you compete against the sex you were assigned at birth until you've gone through the whole surgery and hormone process.
High school biological boys who identify as girls compete against boys.
The only problem will be intersex or hermaphrodites.
