If it makes you feel better, 2 juniors on my high school team ran 48 for the 400 casually. However, no one was near 14:40 for 5k, even years later in college.

I believe your claim that 2 juniors on your HS team ran 48s. I do not believe that it was casual.
This is an underrated comment. There are roughly 50 or so women currently in ~14:40 shape or better. For a woman to even be thinking of medaling in a global championship these days it takes being in ~14:10 shape, and any woman capable of 14:10 is certainly capapable of casually running a 14:40. A 48 low for a woman is most likely getting them gold in any global championship.
It's a good thing we aren't talking about women here then, are we? For two men, would you say 1:56 is superior to 14:10 just because it would be more competitive in a female global final?
Most male distance runners with 1:56 ability can't even hold 14:10 pace for 3000m, let alone go another 5 laps.
48 takes a lot of talent and a bit of effort 1440 takes some talent and a lot of effort
sprint vs distance speed is apples to oranges. Literally every guy on the HS basketball/soccer team is beating their XC counterparts in a sprint. I've easily beaten guys in a 100m with 5k times 6+ minutes lower than mine.
I'd say it depends on what you mean by 48 low. I'd say 48.3 is roughly equivalent to 14:40.
2023 outdoors in d1
48.0 was the 213th fastest time
48.1 was 236th.
48.20 was 254th
48.30 was 279th
14:40 5000 was 398th best time.
BUT, not everyone capable of 48.0-48.3 runs an open. You have 100-200 guys that could move up and hit that, 400H guys that only run that and 4x4, and a handful of stud 800 guys that could run that in the open.

Lets look at the male numbers then.
The 650th best in the world over the last 5 years in the
400 is 46.35
800 is 1:48
5,000 is 13:36.
So the 48 guy is only 1.65 seconds behind the 650th fastest 400m runner in the world, but the 14:40+ 5k guy is over a minute behind the 650th best 5k guy (which is 5.5 seconds slower per lap).
And while the numbers above do suggest a 1:56 is better than a 14:10 for a guy, not by much, it certainły is not better than a 14:20. Sure a 14:20 is better than a 1:56 for a highschool boy, who hasn't put in the miles yet, but not for an adult in their prime.
