No credible runner uses a treadmill, if pavements are icy, run on trail, or grass football pitches.
Literally no excuse to ever have to run on a treadmill.
And gyms are the worst collection of humans there is. None are concerned with fitness. They just want gains and insta likes. Pathetic.
Should I run tempo on an icy road or an unshoveled track then?
So besides the amount of people in this thread who, for some insane reason, can not imagine an actual cold climate, there's a surprising amount with weird complexes about gym-goers.
I've been in and out of gyms my whole life. You'll find that most people at most gyms are pretty normal. Just because someone's lifting some crazy numbers doesn't mean they're an insane idiot meathead. Or just because someone's overweight and walking on the treadmill doesn't mean they complain to the manager because of your 6:00 miles.
A dude repping out 350 on bench told me has impressed by my running and I said I was impressed by his lifts. Now we wave and smile and say "What's up?" to each other. Simple, normal, human stuff that a lot of posters here probably can't imagine.
I run 2-3X outside and 4X on the treadmill at my gym each week. 2 of my treadmill runs are easy at 8:00 pace. The other two I do are as follows:
2 mile warm up / 4@6:31 pace of 9.2MPH
2 mile warm up / 5K under 18 min (10.3-10.5)
I have never once had anyone say or look at me negatively. I too have never said anything to anyone else on a treadmill but I have to say the person who walks for 60 min at 2.0MPH texting the entire time is annoying.
I also wipe the treadmill down really good before and after I use it even though I am not sweating / dripping on the machine much if anything.
Yes, the dude who is lifting 300+ pounds and telling is far worse

The complaints are usually from women talking about faster male runners revving up the treadmill to 10mph, sweating profusely all over the machine, staring at women while they run intensely, making hand gestures in the air like they are celebrating the finish line of a race they just won, etc.
If you are one of these types of people at your gym, try to be more modest when you run at a quicker pace on the treadmill. Cut all the histrionics.
I guarantee you are lying. You may have had a couple of complaints if you are even real. Where is this place?

Is that how your relationship began?
It sure is. He chases me around and I briskly jog away and say, "hehe, you'll never catch the flash!" He tried his best and huffs and puffs and say, "Come here, I'm gonna weight throw you into the sky like Team Rocket!" He rarely catches me, but when he does, boy oh boy, the sparks start flying!
I tried working out in a gym but to maximize space, they had the treadmills stacked right next to each other. Sweating is what happens when you work out, but I can imagine it's not fun to be sprayed by some random guy's sweat. Or at least not fun for some people. It was kind of impossible to get any work down without impacting the person next to me so I ended up setting a home gym.
We get some iteration of this thread every few months. It's always 10 mph on a treadmill at a commercial gym and the non-existent people supposedly complaining about it.
Agreed. It's almost like there is a desire to start this false narrative that everywhere you go you are intensely being watched and judged. In reality, nobody gives a crap and more often this narrative is used to justify victimhood and inceldom.
I do have one that bugs me at the gym. I don't run on the treadmills at the gym since I have one at home and I run outside 99% of the time, but I do go there to lift.
The people that set the treadmill to some huge incline and then walk on the treadmill and hold on to the front bar. It amazes me that people don't understand that this isn't a good workout. Since I'm in CA most of the time they should be outside anyways to walk.
I live in a cold winter state. Training for the marathon trials. I’ve done two 16 mile runs @ MP. I also did a 10K @ 12mph today. People notice. But it’s not like I’m about to fall off the treadmill or anything. I’m sweating, but only on the machine—not on others. Yeah, I get it that my machine is loud, but I have to do what I have to do.
I don't understand people running on a treadmill, especially good runners. I would much rather run outside and do intervals on a track, even in bad weather and I live in Michigan. I hate running on a treadmill and the look at me gym culture.
I live in north Gent, Belgium, there is only one track in this area and it is run by a highly territorial club.

I managed a Golds back in the day and our biggest issue was funky stuff going on in the locker room.
Still happening?
My local 24h gym is pretty tame, gets crowded on weekends evenings with teenagers hanging out and lifting, but better that than them doing stupid. The worst I’ve been offered is a group deal on creatine.
There is a guy at my gym who must have some sort of physical impairment because he cannot get from one stride to the next without his foot jabbing into the belt as he tries to land his foot. This results in his running shoes making a squeak on every footfall. The guy is usually holding on to the rails as he tries to run and it is not much faster than a brisk walk.
I will admit that when I would run on the treadmill at the gym, I would always be tempted to see how fast I could go. You do not get that kind of direct feedback when you are wearing a garmin. You can also go a bit faster on a treadmill because of the lack of wind resistance and being able to use the energy of the belt to move your stride along. I definitely stuck out like a sore thumb and would cover the treadmill in sweat. But it was a neighborhood Y in a bedroom community. So, no hot young women to ogle. Even when just running 7-7:30 pace, you do create a lot more noise and sweat like a whhooorrre in church when running on a treadmill. There should be separate treadmill areas based on pace to keep the faster runners from ruining it for everyone else.
The worst part about running on the treadmill is when someone gets on the one next to you and you have to pass gas. It's uncomfortable to try and hold it, you put your body under more of stress. It's not like when you're outside and you can let them rip.
