Do these “conversations” ever pan out? Every year some dude in the mountains runs 3:5x and then gets dusted at natty’s. Imma call it now, Nico ain’t breaking 3:54 this year.
He ran 4:02.69 in the dome in 2022 and ran 3:56.00 the same season. The same improvement would be right around the current NCAA record
Every year somebody comes around and says the conversion chart isn’t real and then every year people run the converted times at sea level and everyone is baffled. You clearly don’t understand how altitude works. Your VO2max is literally ~10% lower at 7000 feet than sea level.
No no no. Have you never heard of adaptation? When Wanjiru ran 2:06 in the heat in Beijing it doesn’t mean he could run 2:02. We just don’t know. But we do know that adaptation offers mitigation against the stressor, so Nico’s 3:57 is worth faster than a 3:57 but probably only 2-3 seconds.
I would argue that wanjiru was every bit as good as the current crop of 2:02 marathoners. One of the greatest talents ever.
NAU Fr Baloga ran 4:51 (mile) and 2:15 (800). She’s entered in the USATF xc u20 race. Assuming she’s going to skip tomorrow race? why are the NAU Moore sisters listed as unattached and both DNF in the mile.

Of course he was but you are not factoring in the super shoes. Yes place Wanjiru in the super shoes in hot Beijing and he runs low 2:04, which is astounding.
These altitude conversions are always extremely generous. Remember when Geoffrey Kamworor ran 27:01 at altitude? Does anyone really think he was in 26:06 shape at the time, which was what it converted to at sea level?
I would put down a lot of money right now that Young doesn't run faster than 3:53 this year

Excellent observation.
Further perspective:
Nico just ran one second slower than Ollie Hoare . . . and one second faster than Joe Klecker . . . when they ran their Colorado altitude mile records back in August 2020 . . . outdoors . . . at approx 5400' elevation . . .
Kip Keino ran a 3:34.91 in 1968 at 7,000 feet in the Mexico OG.
This is @ a 3:52 mile.
So this would convert to a 3:43 sea level mile? At a time the WR was 3:51?
Maybe
Not a chance. Keino’s Mexico City 1500m was his lifetime best and his next fastest was 3:36.8. For a runner that was raised at sea level, and only spent a year at altitude, Ryun’s 3:37.9 at Mexico City was phenomenal.

What mile time do you suppose Keino's 3:34.91 1500 at 7000m altitude would be worth at sea level?
Has to be one of the greatest runs ever.
Surely far superior to the 3:51 Ryun WR at the time.
Idk about 3:48, but when he ran 4:02 at this meet 2 years ago, he ran 3:56 a week later. Who knows if that track math is mathing, but he should be pretty quick, especially since he was 6 seconds ahead of 2nd.

He never ran a time that was comparable at any other distance, or in the steeple. If he been capable of 3:51, or faster, and with his strength, he would have run sub-13:00. His Mexico 1500m time, is inexplicable.
Funny that not breaking 3:54 got insta down votes like that’s easy. The college record was 3:55 run by a better dude than Nico. Y’all gen Z cheata fly pan sexies are a hoot.
I know it’s hard to move on, but Nico Young is one of about a dozen collegiate runners currently better than German Fernandez. This isn’t because of super shoes or bouncy tracks. This is due to track and field evolving by nature. I don’t care how good you think your favorite runner from eras past is, all but the absolute most talented past runners would get absolutely rolled in the NCAA today. It is a faster time.

Ignore this race, he ran a 3:37 at 19 and a 7:37 3k with a big kick off of cross country fitness, not too crazy to think he could run a 3:52 now

His cross country fitness was not that good. He’s had quite the breakthrough since then.
