You act like going away to college and living in a dorm is going to make most young adults independent, and that's far from reality. Esp if one has to take out loans and/or doesn't know what they want to study anyway. (non athletes I'm talking about)
years ago, I had a friend who said, "I don't know why there's this big push for college for average students. they go away for four years and then come back and take jobs that they didn't need a degree for anyways."
Edit: I know why! Because college is a BIG Business. I agree with the other poster, community college often has better professors anyway.
