The investigators asked her why she just didn't hang up the phone when the conversation went south? She said she didn't think of that at the time.....WTH!
Clearly these two were attracted and liked each other.
Un-suspend Coach Tucker.
One of the only sane people here. There's no such thing as phone rape. That's like saying you got raped by a quadriplegic. If there was harassment, the phone records would automatically absolve him.... because nobody has a 40 minute conversation unwillingly with a telemarketer
Why would I want a leader in my organization whose so bereft of common sense that he thinks it’s a good idea to have extra-marital relations with someone we are bringing in to talk about sexual violence? You called the sexual abuse survivor and wanked on the phone? Yeah your judgment is abysmal you’re not capable of this job.
How can you possibly have non-consensual phone sex? Just hang up. it's a shame no one but Clay Travis has the guts to stand up for the guy.
He probably should lose his marriage but not his job. If your are having 20+ 30 minute_+ phone calls with a married man, you be definition are consenting to the phone calls. If he starts to whack it and you don't like it, hang up the phone.
doesn't matter if this was "consensual" or not - or even if its possible to have non consensual phone sex. He admitted that he was in a sexual relationship with someone the football program employed. This person also happens to be someone who educates the football program about matters of rape, sexual consent etc.
The choice to get involved in this relationship proves that he does not have the judgment or leadership qualities necessary for his job. It was incredibly dumb. He will get fired - the university has no choice

As this plays out it's fairly obvious that he'll lose out here more due 'poor judgment' rather than sexual harassment.
Things get interesting though in terms of his pay out. While 'poor judgment', it's an important distinction that the woman was not an employee of MSU, but just an outside speaker brought in for one day. He wouldn't be required to report a relationship with a third party vendor to MSU. He may also be able to prove that he had an ongoing healthy normal relationship with the woman, which would put the phone sex into context. Surprisingly, MSU may have to settle on some payout vs 0.
I haven’t read the details, but I am sure it’s wild and crazy and dumb. That said, I’m a little tired of the tribalism in every article. You’ll never convince me that the base human nature and overall level of evil, stupidity, etc is materially different at MichSt, UM, PSU, OSU, Harvard, NCSt, Alabama, TAMU, UT, BYU, USC, UO, etc
Im not saying this to criticize you...but OH MAN you should read the details first. I bet you may change your mind about "every school".
Michigan State seems to harbor bad behavior! This coach is a disaster! Didn’t several MSU players get arrested for beating up an opponent in the stadium tunnel over a game last fall?

Wow, what a racist you are!!!!
Nobody mentioned race. Who gives a F if they both were of the same race or different races. Just hang up the phone.
College coaches are insane people. My cousin played D-1 Football in the Big 10 before transferring into the MAC Conference. I asked him what the head coaches were like at both programs he described them as:
1. Stubborn. They never think they are wrong and fight for their point of view until they are blue in the face. You can prove them wrong, they won't care. In fact, they get pissed if you do so.
2. Jerks. They treat preferred walk-ons like crap but they will give their scholarship guys every opportunity and a very long leash to mess up even if they kind of suck. They mentally try to break players and say really abusive things to players which are never reported out of repercussions and fear.
3. Dumb. They know nothing but football. They literally never bothered to learn about anything else. He tried to have small talk with the head coach and he was incapable of doing that. These guys spend 80 hours a week doing nothing but studying game tape and prepping for spring, summer, and fall football. Then the recruiting trail. They are terrible socially and never develop interpersonal skills.
4. Overpaid, Child-like dictators. I don't need to explain this.
5. Corrupt. You already know this. Boosters and prominent alumni control a good amount of the program - mostly the depth chart. My cousin played pre-NIL, so I imagine it's 10x worse now.
Sounds like you and your cousin don't know what the F you are talking about. He went from The Big Ten to the MAC....We all know why. He couldn't cut it.

I'm sure you played college football and have such incredible insight to share with us.
FWIW, he left because of a coaching change. The difference between a poor B10 team and a good MAC team is not much. Plenty of MAC teams have beaten P5 programs in the past 10 years.
Sorry Rojo, but even if your premise is accurate he deserves to be fired. Tucker's $95 million dollar contract was predicated on upholding a morality clause which states that he can be fired for cause if he "engages in any conduct which constitutes moral turpitude or which, in the university's sole judgement, would tend to bring public disrespect, contempt or ridicule upon the university." A sexual relationship--even a consensual one--outside of his marriage with a woman who was employed by his university to educate on sexual misconduct certainly falls within the parameters of these stipulations. He literally signed up for this. When you're being paid this much to be a public figure that represents the face of your institution, you aren't held to the same standards as the rest of us. You have to be above reproach.
I 100% want to hold my coaches and politicians to the highest of standards that's why I didn't vote for Clinton or Trump. Would I want Mel Tucker as my football coach? No (And I'd also never offer 10-yeer contract to any coach or player in any sport, pro or college but you only see it in college as it's not the college administers money. It is the owner's moeny). Do I want my coaches having affairs? No, but I'm just not sure you can fire a coach for having one and feel like Mich State is just overreacting here as they under reacted in the Larry Nassar case. And the comparisons to Larry Nassar are embarrassing but SI wrote that exact comparison this week.
Coaches generally do not get fired for having affairs - Sean Payton, Bill Belicheck, certainly did not.
Moreover, how do you not know he doesn't have an open marriage? If that's the case, then whose morality do you draw the line on? I don't agree with open marriages and you may say that's crazy but some people even think having multiple wives should be celebrated - look at the former coaches for the Atlanta Track Club. Others don't believe in marriage.
Regardless, he's not being potentially fired for having an affair but rather sexual harrassment and I think the idea that he sexually harassed her on a phone call, when she had 20 plus 30 minute phone calls with hiim, is absurd. Just hang up.
She wasn't an employee, right, just a guess speaker? Unless it comes out that he was repeatedly calling her and she was refusing the calls or he was somehow threatening her about a loss of income, this just seems like two adults using really poor judgement.
Women have to be given agency in relationships, particularly when they are VIRTUAL relationships. It's sexist to assume she couldn't hang up the call or tell him she isn't interested. This isn't a case of two people kissing and she felt threatened by his size.
It's embarrassing that people can't differentiate the vast difference between a Larry Nassar and this. The fact that they are being treated as almost the same is ridiculous. A university should stop innocent patients from being sexually molested by their doctors. Period. I'm not sure it's a university's job to tell an employee what they should or shouldn't say to their phone girlfriend.
And why is he suspended without pay? He's not a threat to anyone on the campus. Let him coach the team while the investigation continues. After a hearing is held, and I definitely think he should be allowed to cross exam the accuser but don't think he will be allowed to do so, and a ruling is issued, if you want to fire him for being immoral, then do it then but let the man have due process although these Title IX case.
They were doing the right thing but then it got leaked to the press and they panicked.

entirely agree. although we don't know all details does not appear to be a problem w sexual harassment or assault - just very poor judgment
Tucker loaded the gun and handed it to her. He must have been desperate AF with the bluest balls. Not at all surprised by her response and I don’t feel sorry for him at all. This is definitely a very MSU situation.
I’m not sure why I never researched this but Tuckers only head coaching experience outside of MSU was one season at Colorado where he went 5-7. I thought his record with the Buffs was like 9-3 or something respectable. That’s a fairly small and unimpressive sample size.
Why was this a good hire to begin with?
And don’t tell me he was a great assistant coach because those two roles are nowhere near similar in the football world.
Let the litigation for wrongful termination begin.
They can bring in clueless Rojo to explain why HR departments shouldn't concern themselves with situations such as this. He can stammer away just like he did in his ramble above.
