On the Flotrack episode discussing Brussels they said exactly this. She was good but not on the radar and then 'came out of nowhere' with her 4:26 1600m time senior year. It was a big surprise.
Come off it. She ran the 1600m five times prior to that race, the mile once, two 3200s, five 800s, a number of relays. That is a lot of racing for a freshmen. Even if it had been her first ever race, you act like 4:48 is so remarkable, but it simply isn't.
And Webb? He broke Ryun's national sophomore mile record, was the first high schooler to break 4 minutes indoors in the mile, broke Ryun's national high school mile record, was second at Footlocker, You are simply grasping at straws, lamely, comparing her to an athlete who showed elite talent right off the bat. That senior year 1600 in comparison was a complete outlier foreshadowed by nothing right when the Johnsons were making a full court press.
I think it’s remarkable. I just pulled up a very top high school prospect, one that randomly came to mind, to see what she ran as a 9th grader: 4:51.49 in the 1600m.
So why don’t you give us some examples of all these ‘non-remarkable’ athletes running 4:48 in the mile as 9th graders.
I also agree that 4:48 is a fantastic time for a freshman and remarkable given that she was splitting her time between soccer, basketball and running. How many multisport girls run 4:48 as a freshman? I’d love to see a list. I think she ran a 4:46 1600 as a freshman so she improved 20 seconds from freshman to senior year while being a multisport athlete until senior track, going through cancer surgery as a sophmore and another crises her junior year. I don’t think a 20 second improvement in three years is unusual especially pacing behind a pro runner.
Wiley is gong to sign a huge deal soon. If they make running shoes they have come to the table with offers. Over the next week you will see the best offer rise to the top, be accepted, and announced. Terms over dolllars. But trust me, at 1:57.64 and 3:59.18 the dollars are there! As are the terms. Huntington U is going to look STUPID for letting Lauren Johnson go as the coach and then she becomes the lead of a pro group with a major shoe deal.
Wait, hang on there…just based on the news of the ‘sex stuff’, her husband, and her by very close association, should not have been coaching at that university after the husband getting fired.
Since sabotage is a real possibility in this corrupt sport, athlete’s should surround themselves with a team they can trust.

alan webb ran 4:02-high (converted 1600 to mile) at arcadia his sr year, then went to pre and dropped 9 seconds from that time against actual competition. it happens.
Webb had already run 3:59 indoors, which is worth at least 3:58 outdoors, maybe even 3:57 outdoors. So there wasn't a 9 second drop in time.
She said “at least one more race” so I assume it’s going to happen sometime next week which lead to my conclusion of her running the Diamond league final.
How in the world does "one more race" equal "a race next week" in your mind? One has nothing to do with the other. The fact that you think it does means that don't know how to think logically.

I only have vague knowledge of Wiley’s background, but I thought the Cancer surgery was around the age of 10. I’m not at all aware of “going through cancer surgery as a sophmore and another crises her junior year.” So my initial research turned up the following video: she was a breakout mid-distance athlete by the end of her Junior year:
Of course I am. But that is irrelevant. Addy ran 1:57.46 and 3:59.18. She is the only active American with PR’s that start with a 1 and a 3 in those two events. One the second ever. Shoe companies and agents know this. Wait for Paris, and then LA. It’s Addy Wiley’s decade.

And the rest of the year, she was training for other sports and could not focus on track. Yes, she was training for track and running races for part of the year. A 20 second improvement over three years is not unusual especially since she was a part-time runner to start and didn’t even finish high school in the top three 1500/1600/mile times.
As a few examples, Laura Muir improved more than 20 seconds one year, 10 seconds the next year and then another almost 8 seconds the following year. Jenny Simpson improved more than 10 seconds each year for three years straight. Christina Aragon dropped 7-1/2 seconds in one year to a similar time as Wiley’s 4:26. Alexa Efraimson dropped 20 seconds in three years to a time faster than Wiley’s 4:26. Big improvements don’t always happen, but big one year and three year improvements are not unusual. Knowing the context of what was happening as far as training and health issues is important, IMO.

Watch the video. She crushed it the summer between Junior and Senior year, too.
They discovered another tumor in her Sophmore year, started the surgery, but then stopped the surgery. That’s got to put a damper on training and mental health for a kid. There was another crises her Junior year prior to track season, but I won’t bring it up even though details are available online.
it is very hard not to like her... she seems like a down to earth happy warrior who likes running...
think i'll just stick to what i see her do and hear her say herself...
not sure why anyone would presume to tell her what to do with her life and with whom she can be friends...
My last statement was partially a reaffirmation for those saying Wiley should stay with her coach. I would not, for example, say she needs to just get up and train with Mike Smith (or whomever, including with all of the athlete’s in that coach’s stable).
