Pretty syltraightforward stuff here.. he had 2 clear options for a gold: 1) run 3:27/8 knowing no else can, or 2) draft until 600 to go. He chose to play rabbit today. The moment he went to the front I knew something was coming. They had a fairly slow start so that was his missed chance for the faster pace and shoukd have been a clear signal for option 2.
Yep, but Jakob is clearly way faster than the field. He just decided to run 3:27 pace when he had enough real estate left to run 3:30. If he thinks someone is going to pace a super fast WC final for him like Tim did he's crazy. He has to do it on his own.
Jakob said after the race: "I felt that my legs were not very good today. Very bad timing, I think. I felt in the warm-up for the semi-final that my throat was a little dry. I don't feel like my body was 100 percent and after the first 200 meter in today's race I felt I was not 100 percent. "I had no chance. I had nothing to offer. It's a bit of bad luck on timing. I have been in good form this year. And then when it comes down to it, I fail"
He was also asked about if the feeling was similar like last year WC 1500, and say "No, last year I was the best in the field and should have won, but I made big tactical errors. Today, I was not the best one in the field".
Yes, Jakob always tells it like it is. We should believe him.

I mean getting to the start line always in absolutely perfect shape is hard. A lot of the nuance in being able to win a global title relies on just feeling good on the day. I felt watching the race live that when he took over the race after that first lap he almost did begrudgingly and without the same conviction as we have seen even in much faster races. And as an athlete you do know on some days, for no rhyme or reason, that you just don't have it in your legs and you just hope you still have enough to overcome that.
I especially agree with his assessment of last year vs this year. He looked a different athlete in last years world final and just made a mistake he didn't need to. Today he was just off his game (considerably) and looked flat. Peaked too early? Two sub 3.28's and a 7.54.1 2 mile could suggest that. Not sure if we will see the same "revenge destruction" of the 5000m field we saw in Eugene if he does choose to race the 5

Yes but if he let's the race be a 3:30+, can he still reliably win in a kicking contest ?
I think yes in most races, but in a WC or Olympic final I'm less sure.
yes no problem in a sub 3:35 race imo. Look how it was easy in the semi last lap for him. Nobody was all out but still. If it goes slower than that then it will be a problem but many guys in the field don't want it to be that slow either so let them do their part of the work.

It also didn't look like he was fighting hard in the home straight. Kerr was straining every step, Jakob looked impassive. Could be winning meant more to Kerr and that can natter when margins are so fine
He ran a 52 last lap in the semis. Josh ran a slower last lap in the semis to qualify. Guess what happens when you run a 52 last lap in any distance race? Your legs get jacked with lactic acid and it takes time to recover. Josh recovered faster than Jakob. He won.
Just ask that Norweigan 400m Hurdler kid who busted a 44.3X in the heats and got crushed in the finals. Only one lap, what does it matter right? Matters a lot.
Thanks especially for that first interview posted, in which, at the end of it, Jakob says he will probably run the 5000m tomorrow. It’s crazy how quickly soon after the race that the WA broadcast stated Jakob might not be running the 5000m.

But it did seem like karma for those cocky antics. You just can’t do that hand waving in the semi and lose in the final. It’s like a football player taunting on a breakaway run but fumbling before crossing the goal line.
