I don't think I had much else in me over 400, maybe high 52 at best. It wasn't like I was particularly strong endurance-wise either - the sweet spot was 3000/5000 for me so I sometimes felt I should have been more capable over 400.
No way.. you just didn't focus enough on speed training or raced enough 400s. You were a 50/51 runner and didn't know it.
Those with 57s times have run 400m poorly. My teammate who runs long distances tried 400m at race. He went out 100% and died after 250m. Run barely under 60s. Later in training with better pacing he ran 58 flat. In 800m he probably could run just around 2:10. 10k pb for him is mid 33.
In order to get 800m 2min, runner with great endurance need 400m under 56.
Question. Peter Snell won the Olympic 800 twice with a pr of 1:44. His coach was Lydiard. Lydiard insisted on 100 mile weeks. Has anyone on the world class level had success without hitting 100 mile weeks for the 800? Rudisha? Kipketer? Coe? Or do all of them run 100 miles per week or more? Thank you for any information.
No. That is bad coaching if you can't get a 57 guy with great endurance to break 2. I have done it multiple times.
I ran 1:59.7 and 4:01 for 1500m. I’m not sure I could have run under 57, although I think I ran ~26 for 200m. But I ran under 30:00 for six miles and under 31:00 for 10k. But like most distance guys the 400 was doubtless a lousy effort.
long time coach here in NY..retired over 20 years ago...had a kid whose best 440 ( dating myself ) was 56.8 on a relay split, but the next day ran 1:59.8 Open.....definitely an outlier....could only run 4:40 for the mile...was 12th man in XC...I cannot explain it...
This kid is obviously the greatest pure hate runner of all time.

I don't buy it.
57.0 and 1:59.9 would mean that it is bad coaching when you don't get a 48.0 runner go 1:40.97. It's just not realistic.
Yeah.
I know 15 year old who trains like crazy, runs over 80mpw. He ran 3:55 1500m and 54.50 400m. With that endurance he managed 1:58 800m.
Another boy one ran 90-100mpw. He could run 57-58s 400m and in 800m races he just managed 2:10. Now year later, he ran 2:03, but haven't tested himself on 400m. 3000m time of 8:48
Nice examples. I believe you but you don't seem to believe that I have coached several guys to 57/1:59. Seth Hirsch claims that he can barely break 60 on the fly yet ran 7:59 for 3000 which is 2:0x back to back to back to back for 800.
