You aren't going to really get black history in school. You need to go far deeper than that to get the real story. I own big books telling the story, it takes that.
46% of people of color voted for DeSantis including 19% of black men.
Many African Americans voted for L.B.J., 1964 election. L. B.J. was a criminal and a racist. An African American vote for a racist doesn't alter a candidate's status as a racist.
Brush up your history.
LBJ passed the Civil Rights Act of 1964. One of the biggest legislations for blacks in history.
It simply doesn't merit saying. Describing the kind of work that slaves were forced to do carries with it the obvious implication that they had the skills to do those jobs. We don't need to say it, and we certainly don't need state level intervention to ensure that it is said - it's clearly understood. The reason is it being said is to try to offset some small part of the horrors of slavery, (and that is only being done because DeSantis wants to pander to his base (and make Trump's base his own) - but we can ignore this part and the rest of my point stands fine on its own).
Let's be honest here. Bringing up slavery over and over and over again (YES IT WAS HORRIBLE), is MAINLY done to pander to the liberal base and solidify blacks voting for the blue team. And you know it.
No, I'm saying that your argument that since it's true, it should be in the curriculum doesn't make any sense for the several reasons that I listed.
I'm also saying that a governor is intervening on educational issues for the purpose of political pandering, and that his effort to smooth some of edges of the horror that was slavery is result of that pandering.
Very different than saying there's a conspiracy to claim slavery is good; but I don't think that you want to hear any of that because you may, perhaps, not be interested in an honest discussion of the issue.
It doesn't make sense for schools to teach things that are true?
I learned about the African slave trade, indentured servitude, history of slavery, the types of work slaves did while in school. I graduated high school almost a decade ago. Can you explain to me how I was harmed by this racist education?
This isn't "being brought up over and over." This is being brought up because the governor intervened in the issue of the specific educational content being taught in the classroom.
Where slavery is really being brought up is in a college level African American studies class being taught in high school. I could not imagine a more appropriate place for slavery to be discussed.

Lol. The Alt Left has changed some the history, I mean interpretations, I mean added newly found information. No its not the same sir.
Anyone know if there are chapters describing how black Africans raided villages, kidnapped the occupants (men, women, and children), put them in chains and transported them to the coast where they were sold at a profit to white slave traders?
But yes, patronize black people more, they appreciate it, and don't know whether anything they do is right or wrong until some inane white paternalist tells them. Thanks, massa!
Im sure this article represents what Florida is doing in an overly simplistic manner, but if there is truth that they have teach positives skills that african americans learned while slaves, that is just asinine.
fwiw, slavery and civil rights have always been taught in a cartoonish way. I didn't know about that Africans participated in the slave trade until I was 25. The whole Rosa Parks thing was staged, along with other incidents. I don't even think it's wrong that they did that. But it shouldn't have taken 50 years for the story to come out. Those stories shouldn't have been taught as fact 40 years after they achieved what they needed to.
bottom line, while im not in favor of what's going on in FLorida, im in not in favor of how the other has presented things and how they want to continue to present things in the future. And white kids today should certainly not have to put up with being brow beaten about the color of their skin.
Not simplistic at all, it's an exact quote from the state academic standards (see the PDF linked in the article). Also TONS of stuff in there about how everyone else was doing the slavery thing too so white people shouldn't feel bad about it, and did you know that white Europeans had indentured servitude which was basically slavery? Except of course it was voluntary, and in exchange for something of value (trip to the colonies), and for a set number of years, and didn't extend to your children and their children, and didn't involve savage beatings and all that other fun stuff.

Because it's true, it must be included? We don't teach every extraneous and self-evident fact in every subject (do I really need to sat that?). It isn't relevant, it was added at the state's insistence.
You didn't take an AP African American studies class in high school, so what you learned in history class doesn't really have bearing on why a governor affirmatively decided to intervene on the granular aspects of a specific high school class.

That’s why he won in a landslide.
I know more about L.B.J. than you know about L.B.J.
A few minutes after J.F.K. was assassinated, U.S. Senate Select Committee was scheduled to hold Bobby Baker Hearing. Bobby Baker was a DNC henchman who did dirty work for L.B.J. Bobby Baker wasn't involved in 1961 murder of Henry Wallace but Attorney General Robert Kennedy, President Kennedy were planning on bringing down L.B.J. and they knew Bobby Baker knew of most of the felonies committed by L B.J. Do you want to discuss how L.B.J. frequently called White House African American staff n i xxxx? Don't tell me about a darn Bill.
Sure enough, upon assassination of J F.K., Bobby Baker Senate Hearing was cancelled and not rescheduled.

you see things through the lens you want to see them through.
if you don't think a full context is important. ok. i disagree with you. Agree to disagree.
Slavery was really really bad. we all know that. Let's talk about how it fits in the context of our ever evolving world.
if you don't like that, you can teach your kids the story you want to teach.

Tell us about Barry Goldwater again?
And if you think Robert Caro is a legit source for LBJ lore you're even more naive and uninformed than you appear.
You know what would be awesome? If we got back to teaching the the three R’s, people could craft and evaluate arguments about the legitimacy and relevance of topics like this for themselves.
Deathsantis supporters: Yes, let's not only ignore history, let's change so white people look better.
dmb: Actually, let's just teach the R's and not teach history at all
This is an abomination, and in this day and age. To try to rewrite history in such a bombastic way. What an embarassment. This is going to come back in a HUGE . THE BIG BANG TO BIG CRUNCH OF ALL KARMAS. TO SOMEHOW TRY TO REWRITE THE HISTORY OF THE PLANET ALL UP AND DOWN THE AMERICAS FOR HUNDREDS OF YEARS. WHAT IN THE HIGHEST OF ALL F***S THERE EVER WAS AND EVER WILL BE !!!!!
In case you did not know, many slaves went back to their owners for work after the war. What did they know how to do? Pick cotton, clean the house, feed the livestock, etc. Newly-freed slaves had trouble finding work since few people (even in the North) wanted to hire them. Many of them went back to their plantations and asked for a job, and, of course, the plantation owners needed workers so they hired them. The received housing (albeit very bad cabins), food, and clothing but they could now come and go as they pleased. They did not need to work 12+ hours a day, seven days a week. They did not have to worry about being sold or having their family broken up by such sales. They could quit the job anytime they wanted. It was not a bad deal for them. Certainly better than going to Liberia or going to the North and being unemployed. They used their "skills for their personal benefit."
You are an idiot!!!! “It was not a bad deal for them”? Slave owners were some of the most evil, despicable creatures to ever walk the planet earth. They tortured, raped, murdered black folks on a regular basis and you think these animals all of a sudden changed because slavery ended? If slaves had no other option than going baking on the plantation…best believe they were still treated like slaves working for a place to live. They had no rights a white man had to honor. They couldn’t “quit the job anytime they wanted”. Jesus, you can’t be that dumb!!! They would often be in debt to Whitey and would have to work for YEARS to pay it off. Read some share cropper stories. By the way, the torture, rape and murder didn’t stop with the Emancipation Proclamation. That not a bad deal for them comment was asinine!
The new standards require instruction for middle school students to include “how slaves developed skills which, in some instances, could be applied for their personal benefit”. I would say this is unbelievable but it’s not. DeSantis is an unapologetic stone cold racist…makes no attempt to hide. Seems he sits up late at night thinking of new ways to piss off Black people.
This is similar to saying although starving Jews in Aushwitz was bad….in some instances, it helped with obesity.
Ridiculous
Shouldn't curriculum be under the title of 'American history', of which black history is a part of?
So you go to class and you learn about the civil war and all parts of American history, which slavery was a part of.
I think the statement '“how slaves developed skills which, in some instances, could be applied for their personal benefit,” could be offensive to someone who is black.
Yet it is a true statement in the sense that slaves were extremely bound to those who owned them. So for example, they could learn a skill of carpentry, but it was only to the benefit of whoever they served.
Was Desantis trying to be racist? I don't know. I don't think so. He was a history teacher.
