He can post on social media all he likes, if you're not in 3:30 shape, you're not making the cut for a team, or a sponsor. America is deep in the 1500, if you're running a 3:37, even a 3:33. Your goose is cooked. Cool Strava post tho.
I agree -- it was also super humid that day. He pulled away & won comfortably. It's important for athletes trying to take the next big jump to learn how to win in different race settings because at USAs that might mean timing out a 3rd place finish versus 4th.
I don't know how much this one workout moves the needle but he's fit and has a chance to make the team. I like Eric a lot. His post race interview was fantastic in NY. They wanted to cut the mic but he just kept on going & has a good story about sticking around in the sport. I'm rooting for him.
5 min and then active rest after what are essentially time trials is peanuts for rest.
I think people are misinterpreting the rest. He did this:
1200, 6’ rest, 3x 400 with 1’ rest, 6’ rest, 1000, 6’ rest, 3x 400 with 1’ rest, 6’ rest, 600, 6’ rest, 3x400 w/ 1’ rest, 6’ rest, 400. So we’re talking about 40’+ rest for 3200 very fast and hard work and 3600 of threshold pace.
He could have stuck with:
1200, 5 min rest, 400
That would have been plenty.
He also did 1k, 600 @ faster than race pace.
AND 3600 @ tempo pace.
That's 2 miles faster than race pace, Over 2 mile tempo.
Seems unnecessary this close to the championships.
If he has a history of coming up short in big meets he might want to dial workouts back.
it's been fun to watch all three member of "Empire Elite" hype up their one relevant member on this thread
Report my response because you can’t handle the truth? Clown.
I'm just some hobbyjogger in my 30s struggling to break 19 in the local 5k. But I absolutely love the energy, determination, and passion ERIC HOLT brings to the sport. Stop assuming stuff you can't possibly prove.
Eric Holt The Bolt has basically lived The Athlete Special's story, but he was slower in college and is faster now. He has blossomed in his career by never giving up. Now he's a legitimate contender for a worlds team. He's realistically on the wrong side of the bubble, but stories like his are why you run the races to see what happens. I'm hoping for the best for him and I hope for goodness sakes someone gives him a real contract at some point.
He's #26 in World Athletics' rankings for the 1500m. He's #5 in the USA using that same metric. He took 4th in last year's final. ERIC HOLT!!!
Holt is clearly the fittest he's ever been and to his credit, he does really race hard. However, that hard/aggressive racing style isn't suited for championship racing against a stacked field. He'll likely make it out of the 1st round, but his flailing, wide arm racing is going to cook him in the rounds. To make the team and win big, you need to know how to tuck in and relax til the big kick.

You can see the recovery on strava if you check the workout details. Here’s the actual jist of the workout
.8 miles in 2:51
.25 miles in 5:57 (essentially walking rest)
.26 in 70
.05 in 70 (again just rest)
.25 in 73
.05 in 69
.25 in 71
.22 in 6:50
.66 in 2:19
…
so yes you are correct just for everyone to know, it’s hard rep, 6 minutes rest, flush quarters, 6 minute rest, next hard rep. I previously had this wrong, I kind of underestimated just how damn fast Holt was on the hard parts. Either way still very impressive, all that rest just ensures all of the reps are very quality.
