When on form, Hocker has always beat Teare. Teare is typically closer to his top fitness full time compared to Hocker though. At this moment (6/5/23): Naguse>Kessler=Hocker>Teare...then all the rest
I know that it's commonly held that Hocker might be a bit better than Teare, but the results do not support it. Teare is 5-1 against Hocker in the 1500/mile. Hocker's only victory over Teare at those distances is when he got 5th and Teare got 6th in the 2022 Prefontaine Classic. At various distances
800: 1-0 Hocker
1500/Mile: 5-1 Teare
3000: 3-1 Teare
5000: 2-2 Tie
Overall: 10-5 Teare
Can't chalk that record up to Hocker being off form every loss.
Teare still hasn’t run as fast as Hocker did when he was 20. Also Hocker’s an Olympian with three individual NCAA titles and three individual US titles compared to Teare’s 0 Olympic teams and one individual NCAA title and one individual us title

Hocker has actual credentials including multiple NCAA championship titles, US champ titles and he made it through the prelims, semis, and finished 6th in the Olympics which Teare didn't even make it to. Teare is really good but has only beaten Hocker at meets with little importance ... including a couple of staged time trial meets run during Covid just for PRs among themselves.
I love to see all those guys running 3:34-36 in one race. Hunter must be close to his pr here--did he run 3:34 once? Engels at 3:36 again is only 3 seconds off of his pr, which is promising. It should be very competitive at USAs, and we have one bona fide contender in Nuguse and a young 3:31 guy on the comeback trail.

Teare has beaten Hocker in NCAA, Hocker has beaten Teare at indoor NCAA.
In his post-race interview he admitted he had very low expectations - would have been happy just to break 3:39 - which would explain his conservative tactics. He definitely could have won and run 3:33 if he wanted to.
I maintain his 2021 Olympic 6th is more impressive (all things considered) than Centro's gold from 2016.
Matt C's last 700m, 2016 Olympics, 1500m final was 93 seconds. Cole H isn't capable today of a 93 second 700m. Peak Cole H, about 92.xx 700m. Matt C was challenged by about 5 or 6 guys, final 700m. Watch 2016 then watch 1984. My thoughts when I watched those races in that order: Come on Steve Scott, fight like Matt C!
