addendum: add 1st place DMR, ACC indoor championships. she was the anchor leg, I believe they set a meet record, not too shabby.

If Maatoug is going to have a successful pro career she needs to improve her race strategy and confidence level to win races when the opportunity is there. Currently she tends to get stuck on the rail and allow others to get the jump on her at the crucial stage late in the race.
She won the Dutch Indoor 800 Championship in 2022. That's her biggest victory to date. Otherwise her tactics and ability level are lending to lots of 2nd through 4th place finishes in important races. I mentioned that here and elsewhere before the ACC Indoor Championship. It's big contrast to Tuohy, who has known how to win throughout her career.
Maatoug can't be expected to win anything at NCAAs this year. There are many girls simply better than her right now. But this is what I'm referring to, all within the current school year:
* 4th in ACC Cross Country
* 4th in European U23 Cross Country
* Close 2nd indoors to Addy Wiley
* 3rd in ACC Indoor 800 final
* 2nd in ACC Indoor 3000 final
* 2nd to Sam Tran at Duke Invitational 1500
* 2nd in ACC Outdoor 1500 final
* 4th in ACC Outdoor 5000 final
How do you know so much about this girl? Are you a dutch athletics representative or something? You seem to post about her alot, in much detail.

In his/her defense, lots of people post waaayyy too much (MO) about other female runners in the NCAA. Aswi hardly posts as much about A.M. from Duke, haha.
I do like to go Dutch occasionally when I am out on a dinner date. I think AM shows excellent range but she will surely need to show improvement in the next year or else she may pursue other avenues of excellence.
Moroccan mother (confirmed)
and from her family name I'm beating
55% Tunisian father
25% Lybian father
10% Moroccan/Algerian father.

AM as #1 Dutch runner will beat KT as #1 USA. US track and field is doomed in front of Dutch. And because she is smarter and stronger, in 5 years Dutch will become number 1 country in the world, ahead of USA, China or Russia.
No, she will not have a better career. Why would you say that?
Yes she will. Why would you say that?
Nope

In a few more weeks there will be another flavor of the month "better than Tuohy". When that one fades, apply, rinse, repeat...
The flavor of the month must be Neapolitan, since she was dusted by Ramsden, Thorton-Bott, Appleton, Kazimierska, Jepkirui, Flockhart, and O'Sullivan all in the same meet. Could have added at least 10 names to that list of she would have attempted the 5000.
Can't say that
Maatoug did very well to get 5th in the 5000, especially since it was only her second time running the event and her personal best was the slowest among all 24 entrants.
She broke her personal best by 10 seconds in the final while setting a school record. Given the heat impact in Austin, it means she should be capable of quite a bit lower. She was the only runner who broke her personal best in the final.
Now it will be interesting to see if she sticks with the 1500 as primary or experiments with longer distances. Her kick at 1500 flattened out a few times. She has a bouncier kick indoors and also in cross country.
The Duke coaches were very surprised at the 5000 result. They posted on Instagram that the 5000 was supposed to be a little backup plan for the 1500.
Maatoug has always been very scrappy. Beyond anything, that's the explanation. Whether she fit the distance or knew how to run the distance she was going to fight for a result before going back to Netherlands for the summer.

That is, if AM tries to be a pro runner, but because she is smart, she may choose to forgo running as a waste of time. She is more talented than KT although KT is great too. Let us cheer for both of them.
Indeed.
