Singapore is basically a walking anxiety disorder.

By the time you factor in anxiety depression stress and suicide rates, Singapore is basically hell with clean streets.

It's like living in a mall filled with real estate agents, accountants, and life coaches.

Harsher drug penalties have been tried and failed in the United States because people do these drugs out of addiction. You filled up the prisons with drug offenders for four decades and what exactly did you accomplish other than wasting trillions of dollars and millions of lives, including the families of drug offenders whose parents are in jail and prison and can't therefore earn a living after getting out.

88 SGD per liter is insane. Not sure what the exchange rate is now but it was ~1.25-1.35 both times I lived there, so that’s about 35 US dollar tax on a liter bottle of 100 proof liquor, would take it from $15 in the US to more than 3x in Singapore.

It’s a common lie told by the left that people in prisons in the US are there for drug use. It’s really not the case. When Biden proclaimed he was going to release everyone in federal prison for marijuana use, nobody was released because there was nobody there. Only about 20% of people in the prison system are there for drug crimes, most for dealing (do you not feel that drug dealers pose a danger to society, when overdose deaths exceed 100,000 a year in the US?). When you exclude those that involved weapons or a history of violent crime, you are looking at about 12% of the US prison population.

Don't do drugs.

The reason for the deaths is the fentanyl smuggled from china. Its supercharging the "usual" drugs.

I am unsympathetic in this group of drug takers.

To be fair, state execution has kept drug trafficking rates in Singapore pretty low (drugs are still accessible for the rich if you know the right circles). I will take that over a worrisome drug problem that will accompany a host of other societal issues.

Unfortunately, I think Singapore is too hellbent on weed even though it's not even remotely as harmful as alcohol or cigarettes. I find this double standard really distasteful.

I think that many people have a misplaced idea of the "draconian" laws here, I can tell you this as a citizen here, most of the petty crimes are lightly enforced with fines or either with one eye closed. It's like jaywalking or littering, no one cares enough to watch and catch you.

The more severe crimes have harsher enforceable penalties and I believe our low crime rates are a strong causation of that (inc. other factors e.g. social and wealth nets) and I'm satisfied with this outcome. After visiting many other countries, I realised that it is a privilege to feel safe in your own country and I think too many people get riled up by whatever moral righteousness that blurs them to this outcome.

Huh, “moral righteousness”?? I first want to minimize the systematic power vested in any entity to kill me or anyone dear to me, so it is first and foremost a choice of self-interest.

People’s impression of draconian laws in Singapore is not “misplaced”. Draconian is what murdering someone for the intent to sell weed is. Going easy on jaywalking is irrelevant.

Singapore is basically a port. Imagine the hell hole if they did not have these laws (drug, prostitution, crime…)? Instead it’s the Asian hub for all major multinationals.

It’s not too hard to imagine. You only have to look back to the opium wars era when the British OGs forced opium on the Chinese.

27% of adult males were addicts. They got that turned around with harsh drug laws. We can achieve the same and build a healthier, smarter society.

I don't agree with the death penalty, but it's nuts to be so soft on drugs. The crime that leads to all other crimes.

El Salvador looks like a nice option these days with their president doing a great job at cracking down on crimes. ;)
