I find it amusing people are asking for the OP’s times. That isn’t the point. While the wording might be a little “rude”, it is not wrong to point out that American men (and often women, though not today) are not competitive in international marathons. There is no reason you have to have a 2:03 PR to say this.
I didn’t watch today but it looks like Mantz hung in pretty well and Fauble ran a strong race. But these may be our top 2 Americans (if Rupp hurt) and they were roughly a mile off the winner and ran times that were roughly matched by their predecessors in the 1970-80s
I think the women are competitive; Linden and Flanagan won major marathons, Seidel took an Olympic bronze, Hall ran a tremendous race at London and today Bates was in it until the final couple miles but finished very respectably.

Mantz got beat by less than a minute in his second marathon so what are you talking about?? Mantz ran a ballzy race and paid for it. Faubs ran a consistant race and ended as the best American. Both of them have more in the tank and can learn a lot. US marathoning will be in a good place with both of these two at the helm.
US men are better than any country in Europe at this point, that's all you can really say. We do precious little to support development here and we wind up with people willing to embrace near poverty level existence, like Fauble, at the top of the heap. Anyone unwilling to eke out a meager existence while at the same time flushing away great long-term career prospects with a college degree isn't going to stay in the sport. Sorry, but unless you come out of college with close to Rupp level achievement, you probably aren't going to find great success anyway. Better to simply get on with a career that contributes to society and chase OTQ if you want to linger around the sport a bit more.
We are fine. Actually, I think we are pretty good if you look at the medal count over the last 30 years. Out of the 200 nations that participate in the Olympic sports, only four countries in East Africa and Japan are better than us.
Germany, France, England, Russia, Korea, Australia, Ireland, China, Poland, India, Brazil, Nigeria, Indonesia, Mexico, New Zealand, Canada, and Spain all have a good runner now and then but in general, those nations are not better than us.
Maybe we could try to emulate Japan, but I think East Africa is just better (for about five reasons). That might be something we have to come to terms with.
Yea 2:09 and 2:10 aren't rediculous times for pro marathoners but how Conner faught it out at the front for so long and how smart Scott ran from the gun I can't respect their races more. Conner has a lot to learn and with time he can figure out how to hang a bit longer. With Scott he runs consistantly and smart which put him in a place to go top ten in a stellar field.
placing top-10 in a race like that just means not blowing up. Way more respect to guys like Mantz who put themselves out there in position to try to win than guys who run soft conservative races to get top 10.
