Completely untrue. You haven't read some of the threads about girls trying to get recruited amd getting no responses from coaches even though they are faster than the majority of the current runners. I see the same thing. 9:0x guys aren't getting responses from coaches even though there are guys on the teams running 8:40.

I had a 9:10 pre-supershoes, a 1580 and was easily top 10% of my class with a 4.0 UW (probably closer to top 2-3%), and I received no responses from any of the (Ivy) coaches I had contacted; cost also wasn't an issue. That being said, I was mailed pamphlets by good (better academically and pretty good athletically - think liberal arts colleges like Bates, Bowdoin, Colgate, etc) colleges, but not the ones I had wanted to attend.

My coach does the same thing. I had a good friend who split a 49 in a 4x4 but ran 15:30 and had had official track PRs faster than the entre current roster. And he didn't even talk to him mans woulda been the best guy on the team any event 400-10k.

So I would say it depends completely on the coach/team because other schools in our conference who are very similar to us academically and in athletics got him.

Did you read some of the posts? Not fast enough to get assistance at the Ivies. And there is a real trend lately where coaches don't even respond. It is funny to hear a few posters think that scholarships can be had when faster high school runners aren't even getting the very same schools to respond.

Universities are practically overwhelmed with a huge increase in applications since SAT/ACT scores are no longer required. Schools are also looking to diversify their student population. There are only so many spots available and a lot of institutions are not looking to admit another skinny middle class white boy.

I am noticing a trend at all levels where coaches have less influence over admissions than in the past. They have fewer favors to cash in plus fewer roster spots and smaller staffs after COVID, extended eligibility, and budget cuts. If you are not a special talent and a solid academic applicant with desirable demographic characteristics, expect to be ghosted. That’s the game these days.

I am a high school senior and going D1. I ran faster than the times you listed and have the exact same gpa and SAT. I didn't receive any scholarship from any decent D1 school. I did look into IVY's and was offered admission to a mid-tier IVY. I turned it down because it was too expensive: IVY's can't give scholarships.

If you want to get recruited to top academic, D1 colleges your academics are perfect... those times could be a concern.

You will have to run 1:56, 4:15 and 9:15 to get admission help to a top university. I ran 1:54, 4:10, and 9:05 and would be the top recruit for an IVY's recruiting class for reference. The slowest runner was probably about 1:58, 4:20, 9:20. You are close, but no guarantees. Assuming you run these times or close, email all the coaches you want after junior year. Recruiting questionnaires can be a waste of time: email, email, email.

Junior year is huge, you will be decided before you get through senior year XC most likely.

I was a decent student at a very highly ranked high school, I was recruited and accepted by universities WAY out of my league academically. It pissed everyone else off at my school thinking I would take their spot if they applied. But I was ranked top 5 nationally as a junior.

Moral of the story be really fast and all kinds of doors will open for you. Study vs more training or sleep? You know the answer.

Never a good way to start a post especially when 1/2 of the posters agree with you, Telling him to disregard them is like telling hime to disregard your advice. And your experience is of one person. Some posters are parents and coaches who have dealt with multiple athletes.

I am the parent of a senior who ran 4:12/9:10 as a junior last year. He has very high test scores and is a straight A student. Most of the Ivies did not respond. He was oeefered a spot at one Ivy but when we communicated with the financial aid people, we discovered that we would have to pa full price. He decided to commit to our state school as a walk-on and he will receive a nice discount due to beninf a National Merit Finalist but he received no athletic scholarship.

If you are faster than the majority on their team, typically they will respond. Maybe they won't respond to a single email, but if you follow up with a phone call, or even a second email with someone important CCed, something typically will give. Some coaches aren't great with emails, and some people are really terrible at writing them, so the key is to not just send an email and then give up. Also, people tend to post on here when they have a complaint, no one posts a thread called "today I wrote an email to a coach and they wrote back". So going by such posts is not a representitive sample.

Untrue. I hate to burst your bubble but some kids get slower in college and some teams are at full strength and some coaches only like to recruit who they initiate contact with. I have been coaching for 20 years. The problem is much worse now than it has ever been because coaches had a year off while getting paid amd I think many came to the realization that they get paid the same regardless of how hard they work.

Just want to chime in that I had a great time running at Swarthmore but I was nowhere near as fast as you. You’d have been an XC scorer right away when I was there, but more recently they had a team of 5 in the 25-26 range for 8k.

So I think you’ll find good DIII teams to run with and you’ll have people to train with. Plus, financial aid is not tied to scholarships, which means you can shift gears later if you want to.

Perhaps it’s a good time to schedule some campus visits and ask coaches if you can come say hi?
