High altitude is good for sprinters, bad for distance runners. Makes for slow races.
I was surprised that the races were quite this slow, because I thought someone (not Tuohy) would push the pace especially in the 3k. Tactically there was no reason for Tuohy to take the race out hard. But, unlike the men's race none of the top runners in the women's race were from altitude schools, so no one seemed willing to do that.
I had doubts whether McCabe would try to lead as she has never done it as far as I know. Plourde for UT might have been a candidate - fresh and from altitude.....but no.
I give major props to Taylor Roe for trying to hang on. She said in her post race interview that it’s not interesting if we just let her go.
Between xc and this indoor season, none of her competitors have seen KT struggle which makes it hard to form a game plan to try and hit her weaknesses. The 5k at BU she was tired from xc and was still first.
And like said before, none of top top girls train at altitude like the men so they aren’t going to risk going all out. Plus they watched Tuohy in the 5k just run away from the Kenyans who were trying to challenge her.
Also, the Notre Dame runner Olivia who got second was thrilled! Her goal was just to be all American in the 3k, she secured 3rd place for ND in the DMR Friday and has never been at altitude. She has a really good kick and loved seeing how stoked she was with her weekend.

Valby had the best plan and tho it didnt quite work it came close. But letting these races become more of a 1000 m race after slow pace when Tuohy is cclearly the fastest miler doesn't seem like it would have a chance.
Yeah Valby had the confidence and fitness to try and go for broke. If Katelyn weren’t racing for the team she might’ve just gone with her and outkicked her.
I’m still incredibly impressed with how big KT let that gap open up and how she timed it so perfectly to catch her over an XC course. On a track you can gauge that distance much better.
I really don’t know or think there’s a way to beat her this year.
WHY THE ANNOUNCER SAID THIS WAS HER LAST SEASON. 👀👀
They were talking about Taylor Roe. At a minimum, KT is running outdoors and XC, then we’ll see. I still think she comes back for the remaining records next Spring, but that’s just me.

On the full broadcast Dwight says that it was Tuohys last collegiate Indoors championship twice. The second time was after they interview Tuohy about her win. The YouTube video cuts just before, but its on the ESPN+ full video.
"What a great 2023 for Katelyn Tuohy, What a great way to go out in your last collegiate championship indoors, Katelyn Tuohy double champion in Albuquerque "
He also said she was a senior when she is a junior and a sophomore eligibility wise. It is certainly possible this will be her last college indoor season, but it will depend on what she wants to do.
Go read what the haters said in the Wiley thread about her 5 wins. The same Tuohy lovers claimed that slow times are slow times regardless if winning. Stick with the party line. According to semihaze, Tuohy sucks because she ran slow.
