but for Jakob, that was a stroll in the park from the gun to the tape. 80-90% effort at most. He would have won this in his trainers.
Jakob needed a fast race to win but the end acceleration that has done Nuguse against Katir has nothing common this year.
Fanboys still flapping about Nuguse? So Gourley beat Katir the same way Nuguse beat Katir. Jakob beats Gourley while yawning since it was so boring for him yet somehow Nuguse is a threat to Jakob? Lol. Nuguse hasn't shown he's a sub 3:31 runner even. Jakob is on another friggin planet. Why even discuss this nonsense?

Nuguse beat Gourley by so much it wasn’t even competitive. And it was all in the last 300. Jakob had to work a little to hold off Gourleys move at 150 and then won narrowly maintaining not going away. Nuguse has run a 3:30 equivalent with a 25.7 last lap, it’s OK to give him his due.

Thank you for posting this. I was working and missed the race live.
This looked like a HS race to me where the #1 runner is way better than everybody and never under threat, even for a moment, but just barely runs faster than the rest of the field because he has another 3 events to run. Jakob was jogging and gave just enough effort to win. If Gourley had more to give, then Jakob would have just given a little more. We have no idea what would have happened if Nuguse or Kerr or Katir or Hoare or whoever was in this race because they weren’t racing, but for Jakob, that was a stroll in the park from the gun to the tape. 80-90% effort at most. He would have won this in his trainers.
That is exactly what I just saw on YouTube replay, I think 3:33.x's are a little more than 80 or 90% efforts..but..this was never in doubt. Gourley had his best chance right before the last curve on the last of the back stretch, either would not commit..or could not get past, but that was it. No one is beating this guy, not Nuguse..not anyone..not more than once anyway, he ratchets it up right at the right time, goes from 3:37 pace to 3:28 or so pace coming in..and in a hurry
Seems right on to me. Rabat/Oslo are realistic spots for Nuguse to race on the DL circuit. I can’t see him doing Lausanne so close to USAs. Jakob is unlikely to do Rabat.
I wish all nations was like Norway in that regard that nationals (almost) doesn't matter (relatively), so they can focus on the international races. We can disagree whether Nuguse is better than Jakob indoors, but we can agree that Nuguse only find worthy opponents when he competes against the best of the best in the world. Nuguse vs Katir, Jakob, Wightman, Hoare, Kipsang, McSweyn etc is so much more interesting than Nuguse vs Cole Hocker etc.

Nuguse beat Gourley while Gourley was still sharpening for this friggin event. Come on. That was a month ago. Get real. And no that was not a 3:30, and don't even try with the equivalent crap
Jakob at his best is just too strong for his competitors. He just chills until 800 and then just breaks everybody’s body and spirit from 800-1200 and then just finishes up. That’s how it’s going to go this summer in round 3 of the wc. As long as the first 800 is not super slow, and it won’t be, Jakob will win the race in the next 400 and won’t have to fight anybody off in the home stretch. They will all be kicking for 2nd.
Exactly. I'm howling at the assertions of the benefit of being the closer. That's the residue of decades of ignorant American coaching. One middle distance generation after another has been ruined by American coaches who insisted it was perfectly fine to loiter. And the myth persists.
Jakob is not in top form right now. When he is in form he dictates ruthlessly from the front. He learned one major lesson from the world indoor and outdoor finals last year...he cannot get lazy and overconfident during midsection of the final lap, by allowing someone to pass under assumption there's plenty of time to regather. I saw him screw around and use that tactic when he was young, seemingly to amuse himself. He had plenty of margin at that point. Not at highest level. That's why he'll be like a middle distance Mo Farah from now on, strategically remaining just in front while retaining plenty of finishing kick.
Against Nuguse he might decide he needs to be even more cruel with the midstream injection.

Sharpened or not, Gourley was gonna get routed by a guy running sub-26 in a 3:47 race.
Oh, and Jakob looking at the screen to know if he needs to adjust the pace, kick or not is one of many things that comes with being something that soon can be called a veteran. This was his fourth gold indoors at euros, equal to the number of golds he has at euros outdoors. He has medaled in 13 international championship finals excluding cx, won 7 diamond league meets. I do not think it is possible to show up at WC or olympics lacking just about any international experience and win it easy, no matter how good your kick is. Gladly it seems like Nuguse agrees with that. You got to have the time, but you also got to be able to race the race.

Jakob did a great job here. He ran composed and smart despite being at below his usual fitness. Let’s say he’s usually at 3:28 fitness, I think right now he’s more around 3:31 having only about 6 weeks of good training. Gourleys really not far off that and has a good finish for tactical races. Jakob front-ran and neutralized Gourleys bid towards the end and the race was quick enough that Gourley only had one gear shift.

She looked like she totally sat in the blocks to avoid any chance of a false start, and then walked away from everyone. She looked great.
Bol does that indoors. She's almost rocking back at the start. During the 49.26 world record she had the slowest reaction time in the field at .295.
The question during the final is how Kielbasinka and Klaver handle the first 200. They are training partners with Bol. Meuwly pitted the 3 against each other in frequent outdoor sprints this winter in South Africa. Klaver always got the early lead with Kielbasinka second and Bol third.
But now they are going to be side by side by side in a European final. Klaver deferred to Bol in the opening 200 at Dutch championships because she knew none of the others would be a threat to overtake her at 200. That is not the case with Kielbasinka in the field. It's going to be very interesting how they merge.
Klaver will be the favorite for silver but I think Kielbasinka will pass her late, unless Klaver manages a lead of 4+ meters over Kielbasinka on the backstretch. Kielbasinka is 7-2 lifetime head to head against Klaver at 400 meters. Actually 7-3 after today. Kielbasinka's indoor lifetime best was when she overhauled Klaver last year in their only indoor meeting prior to today.

Yes, agreed. I'm not saying Nuguse won't beat Jakob. Just that people can't just say he finished in xx:xx and then there were none. Firstly it doesn't matter who he beats as long as it isn't Wightman or Ingebrigtsen as no one has been better than them when it counts (and that surely isn't in february). Secondly, there is no use for a nice kick if you never are there to use it. Two fell in this final. Several in the olympic final had no kick left after running semis etc. Its a lot more complex than what people make it out to be. If kick was everything americans would have won every gold the last years. Statistics shows that kick was something in 2012, everything in 2016. Time will show.

Why should we assume this after last year’s WC final? If we’re talking Ingrebrigtsen vs. the field in Budapest, I’m taking the field.
Ingebrigtsen clearly showed he was the class of the field today, but I think there have been some exaggerations about how easy it was - that he was jogging, that he never left 3rd gear, that it was a walk in the park. Gourley gave him a good run and I’ve little doubt Jakob was working hard on the last lap. Yes, he could have run a faster time, but his strategy was to make it an honest pace that would drop much of the field and sap everyone’s kick more than his own - the fact that he was able to execute his plan without a hitch is impressive enough.
Just don't get this. Nuguse was sharpening and targeting for around 3:47, which is not that fast, but Gourley merely wanted to see where he's at during that race.
What exactly is your evidence Nuguse can clearly beat Gourley right now? Nuguse has gotten slower while Gourley has gotten faster. This is fact
Oh the guy that thinks Nuguse got slower because in a race where he dispatched a guy who just ran 7:24 with an explosive last 50 he “only” ran 3:33? Did Gourley get slower with his win at British indoors. Please. Nuguse went out too hard and then ran to win in Madrid.

What is your evidence? Nuguse has run 3:47.4 with a 25.7 last lap and 7:28 for the 3,000. Gourley has run 3:49 and 3:32 with a perfect ride from Kerr.

Pathetic troll-job, but if we play by your rules then Gourley is getting slower as well. 3:32 to 3:34 in just 6 days? Man, poor guy is on a steep slide.

Wightman until last year didn’t have some unimpeachable championship record. And of course he lost to Tim and Hoare in the Commonwealth Games, and Mariano Garcia in the 800 at Europeans. Wightman is very good, but what he mainly showed is how hard it is to beat everybody when you frontrun and are challenged for the lead like Jakob was. Today there was 1 guy who challenged for the lead and it was Neil Gourley at 125 to go. Jakob will be in much better shape outdoors but this wasn’t the challenge he is due to face.
