Exactly. My bet is that they'll go up earlier than that, perhaps 4-5 days. That said, it is a lot easier to adjust to ~ 5000' altitude than it is 8000' +
Everyone adjusts differently to altitude. I have a place up from Silverthorne, Co a bit. It sits at about 8000 ft. I always ride while there because the area around my place has a lot of grades and I don't like running on grades. I always adapt quickly and don't have much of an issue. We also ski at an even higher altitude and that is also not an issue for me. Others that I know always have issues with the altitude, get headaches, etc.
Diamox (acetazolamide) is the best medication that can be used to help with altitude as long as proper hydration is also practiced. While the elevation is quite a bit lower, it's enough to cause issues with some individuals. Diamox is not on the NCAA list of banned substances and I would not be at all surprised if some athletes use it before heading out.
