Well wise old man, if you listened to his interview it’s pretty clear how this happened. He spoke about how easy it is to join a group in terms of process. He didn’t have to sign anything. Basically just told JS he wanted to join. Those conversations all probably happened at the same time. He also talks about how easy it is to leave a group and go back to his old coach or whoever
To the Wise Old Man's point though, even if you can join a group this quickly maybe you shouldn't. Especially with Bowerman's churn rate at the moment. I think the training is not actually bad for Teare, who seems to have a good deal of aerobic ability and has run relatively high mileage. He's faring much better than most first year Bowerman guys with a solid 3K and a mile that with context (1 second+ too fast first 400) was pretty good. It would've behooved him to hash out his event focus beforehand, though if this is to become something adversarial with Jerry. It doesn't seem like it's going to get to the point, but he should push Jerry to let him race 3+ 1500/miles before USAs to demonstrate how fit/competitive he is there, even if Jerry just wants him to run the Bowerman mile and one 5K.
As long as Teare remains a Nike athlete, I can understand that being on Nike approved team A or B can be fungible. Still, Teare is a big time pro and Jerry a big time coach, and you would think Teare wouldn’t make the move without first knowing the nitty gritty details of both the proposed training, event focus and race schedule (barring unforeseen circumstances like injury). Maybe that’s not how it works, but I find it surprising when the stakes are so high, especially for Cooper.
I listen to the LRC podcast, which by the way is quite entertaining. In this week's segment Cooper Teare put Jon Gault (and LRC) on his banned list for breaking the news regarding his move to BTC. He said it was "lame" that J...
There is no deducing what I want involved here. IF you are correct, Teare’s potential is essentially Jakob of the last couple years. That is quite a high ceiling. No US runner has shown this kind of ceiling except maybe Lagat.
He has a better shot at making the 1500m team this year (Nuguse/healthy Hocker) vs 5000m: (Grant Woody Chelimo Nur)
And the 1500m always has so amount of chaos built in. People trip or get bumped. Races go out weirdly slow. Stuff happens in a 1500 (or 800). But the longer the race, the harder it is to "get lucky." Teare is a great runner but I like his odds of getting on a 1500m team over that 5000m team. We already have two spots on lock: Woody and Fisher, so that doesn't leave a lot of room for Cooper in the 5km.
If he really thinks he’s a miler, he went to the wrong program. Jerry turns everyone into one type of runner. Cooper did not sound fully committed though, which is the positive of turning pro early into your college career. He can change andit sounds like he will. Hipefully not too soon though.

Are you sure that he turned “pro early in his college career?” He will be 24 in August.
He’s a miler for sure, which is one of the reasons I didn’t like this move when it was announced. I see him being more like McSweyn than Fisher in terms of his strengths.
Getting out kicked by Henry Wynne is not a good sign. I don’t see him winning a medal in the 1500m with the talent rn. Too many good guys in the 1500m. Kerr, Hoare, Gourley, Wightman, Katir, Nuguse, Jakob, Cheriyout, and the list goes on. Teare focused too much on the 5k in college and while he did win USA’s last year, his current 1500m pr is only 3:34. Can he make the next step and jump in the low 3:30’s/sub 3:30 with Jerry’s training? I doubt it, knowing Jerry’s history.
Very few people have a shot at medalling on the world stage anyway and there's a lot of chance involved in who makes it out of the rounds. Hocker didn't the year he made the Olympics. Maybe Nuguse but that's about it.
I think that there's a chance Nuguse can't keep this up and Teare (who beat Hocker a lot last year) could be the US champion again.
It’s really tough to say with Cooper. He’s shown great ability in both events. I was impressed with how he handled championship style 1500s last year as well as fast ones and was either a contender or a winner in both racing styles. I feel like it’s easier to make the claim that someone has more potential in the 5k because of how fast and unpredictable 1500 racing is, especially at a higher level, but I feel like Cooper really is a 1500/5000 guy rather than a 5000/1500 guy. However based on what people say about Jerry’s coaching style is that he’ll train his athletes according to where he thinks they’ll find the most success so if he wants Cooper to be a 5k guy, that’s probably what he’ll be. All the strength work can also take some sting out of your kick and with the Bowerman training style Cooper might be better off in the 5k under Jerry.

In the last 12 months UAC has taken two former BTC milers that were downright terrible and turned them into world class milers: Sinclaire Johnson and Amos Bartlesmeyer.
Agreed. If Teare wanted to be a miler, he joined the wrong Nike group. Given time, however, he’ll be as good as Grant F in the 5/10, and that’s pretty dang good. But his “miler” days are over.

Sinclaire never stopped being good. She was just frequently injured…..because Jerry is an idiot and has no idea how to train middle distance runners.
No idea why Teare joined this group unless it was for “reasons.” If that wasn’t it, he’s a little too headstrong to put up with Jerry for long and will leave.
