We changed the title of this thread. It was initially entitled. "NO MU, NO PROBLEM. Keely Hodgkinson, Mary Moraa and Diribe Welteji in 800 scrap Wed (Feb 8)". You can watch the meet for free on the WA youtube page if you are in Ireland and many other countries. We have a VPN suggestion here.
Jenny Meadows just said Keely would be very upset with that. Why?
I imagine she ran a negative split 157. I can't figure out how to rewind to get her exact splits.
Maybe internally (and Meadows’ former coach is her coach?) she was targeting 1:56, but the obsession with times is a bit weird. She beat Moraa convincingly and looked well within herself. It wasn’t a time trial.
She looked pretty happy with it. She took the W, beat her biggest rival in the race easily, and ran her preferred way with a negative split running down Yarigo who had a big lead.
Meadows is part of Hodgkinson's coaching team. She's married to Trevor Painter, Hodgkinson's coach and Meadows' former coach.
If Hodgkinson wants a time, she can run from the front at British indoors where she won't have to swing into Lane 2. 1:57 indoors, looking easy, that's a good start to the season

That would be cool to see, but winning will take precedent and could make 1:56 less likely. Deribe Welteji (1:57.02 PR) is in great shape, having just run a 8:33 3k after miscounting laps and taking a seat on the track at 2800. Mary Moraa actually had a 3-1 record vs. Hodgkinson last year. This is definitely the most interesting race of the meet.
Women’s 3k looks good too: Taye, L. Hailu, F. Hailu, Getachew, Nanyondo.
Yes, I'm sure Hodgkinson wants the win more than a fast time. That CWG loss to Moraa really stung her. I like Hodgkinson's character, she seems really prickly about coming second
Yes, she needs to learn how to beat other 800 runners with better 400 speed than she has. Going out fast and closing fast plays right into their hands.

There it is on the Meadows part of it. I thought Keely celebrated as normal and ran great (minus taking on a little extra distance). The commentary struck me as strange as sub-1:58 is like running a sub-1:45 or whatever. It’s a good time and winning is more important. Ultimately she was there to race and she raced really well. Moraa wasn’t ready to go and it seems Mu is punting on the indoor season, so Keely’s doing about all she can. I don’t really need her to drop a sub-1:57 running right on the pacemaker to validate that. We saw Giles basically do the same thing a couple years back and it didn’t amount to much beyond a one-off great 800m indoor time. This might just be me, but at some point in the 800 it seems doing the “run right behind the pacer at the ideal pace” routine becomes almost counter-productive in the circuit races. The races should be used to use different tactics, seeing how you fare with a positive split, negative, even, from the front, from behind, fast race, moderate race slow race and so on. Unless you are way better than everyone else or want to front-run a fast race, being able to win/finish top 3 in a myriad of ways is how you’ll get into a very stacked 800m final and be prepared for every type of race.
She could but fighting solo, not in duel for the line. I would like Keely to win but I'm afraid Moraa will win if in-form, she has simply faster kick and taking CWG into account endurance.
I also think that Mu will have problems with Moraa in the future, maybe already in Budapest.
That said Moraa is still en enigma. She was weak in 2021 in Tokyo (sf) (and she is older that Mu and Hodgkinson) so her long-term form that is a big question mark.
Tell me about it. Her race at Commonwealths was the strangest race I've seen since Kiprop was playing games with the field at Elmsley-Carr 2015. Hopefully she isn't on a similar "program"
Well the statistics show that any elite Kenyan has around a 10% chance of being busted in the next several years, so I would have thought the odds of an elite Kenyan who gave one of the most unbelievable performances of recent years being clean is less than 1%.

You're not that good with statistics. It is ok though, most aren't.
